SHAWNEE COUNTY —Authorities are investigating the cause of a fire on a train car in Topeka.

Just before 7p.m. Sunday, crews responded to a reported fire on an eastbound Union Pacific train car near NW Macvicar Avenue and NW Water Works Drive in Topeka, according to Police Spokesperson Rosie Nichols.

First responders found heavy smoke and flames coming from a stacked intermodal container car. With the assistance of the train crews, it was determined there were no hazardous materials in the containers.

Crews were able to extinguish the fire and damage was limited to the two containers where the fire originated. Train operations resumed around 11 p.m. Sunday, according to Meg Siffring, Manager of Corporate Communications with Union Pacific.

A Topeka Fire Investigation Unit responded to determine the cause and origin of the fire.  There were no injuries reported.
