The TMP-Marian Monarchs and the Abilene Cowboys squared off in a battle of ranked teams Friday afternoon in Hays but the Monarchs committed too many mistakes in key situations as the Cowboys rally to win both games of the doubleheader

GAME 1: Abilene 12, TMP 6

In the first game of the doubleheader the Cowboys, ranked 4th in 4A, took advantage of four seventh inning errors, scoring eight times, to rally from down two on their way to a 12-6 victory.

TMP (10-4) broke onto the scoreboard first, scoring twice on a two-run single by Ty Schmeidler to put TMP up 2-0. Caden Dinkel added an RBI single for a 3-0 TMP lead. The Monarchs are ranked 5th in 2-1A this week.

A fourth run came across the plate on a Logan Baalman single as TMP built a 4-0 lead.

The Cowboys (13-1) cut the TMP lead in half at 4-2 in the top of the third inning. Then each team added another run and TMP held a 6-4 lead heading the final inning.

The top of the seventh, with TMP leading 6-4, the Monarchs committed three straight errors and allowed a walk. A fourth error followed that as Abilene took a 7-6 lead.

The Cowboys also then scored on a pair of RBI singles and a run scoring triple for a 12-6 lead.

TMP was retired in order in the seven as the Cowboys go on to the 12-6 victory.

The Monarchs outhit the Cowboys 8-7 but committed a total of 10 errors in the loss.

Ty Schmeidler suffered the loss for TMP he allowed nine runs, just one earned in two innings of relief.

Schmeidler drove in two at the plate and Caden Dinkel, Ian Nehls and Logan Baalman each collected two hits.

GAME 2: Abilene 9 TMP 6

Abilene used a four-run sixth inning to rally past the Monarchs in game two 9-6.

Abilene scored first in the second game of the doubleheader but just like in the first game, TMP scored three times in the bottom of the first inning.

They scored on an error by the catcher, an RBI triple by Logan Baalman and a sacrifice fly by Kendall Walker to go up 3-1.

Abilene got a run in the third and then took the lead for the first time two a two-run fifth.

But down 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning the Monarchs answered right back when Ty Schmeidler drove in a pair of runs on an RBI single to put TMP up 5-4.

The lead was short-lived though as Abilene got a three-run triple and scored on a wild pitch for an 8-5 lead.

Braxton Basgall briefly cut the lead to two, at 8-6, with an RBI groundout in the sixth but Abilene added an insurance run in the seventh on their way to the 9-6 victory.

Carson Liles suffered the loss for TMP. He allowed eight runs, five earned, on five hits with six strikeouts and two walks in six innings.

Ian Nehls moved his it streak to 11 straight games and was two-for-four with two runs scored. Schmeilder drove in two runs and Adler Brown collected two more hits.

TMP will host Great Bend on Tuesday.
