Heather Ruder finished second and Allison Pfeifer fifth to help the TMP-Marian girls’ cross country team to a second place finish at the Sterling Invitational Thursday. Ruder (15:51.86) finished about second seconds behind Cheyenne Becker of Pratt. The TMP boys came in eighth. They were led by Lucas Walker who finished 21st (18:45.22).
The Hays High boys soccer team dropped their third straight Thursday, losing 2-0 in Liberal. The Redskins had the wind at their backs in the first half and used it to grab a 2-0 lead at the break. The Indians are now 4-9 and 0-7 in the Western Athletic Conference.
As of 5:50 p.m. the Northwest Kansas Department of Transportation reports that Interstate 70 and US Highway 24 are now reopened. High winds and blowing dirt have prompted Kansas officials to close about 55 miles of westbound Interstate 70 from Colby to the Colorado line. The expanding drought has led the Governor’s office to update the state’s drought conditions. The update includes moving 13 counties from warning status up to emergency status and adding six other counties to watch status. The emergency status now includes Barton, Pawnee and Lane Counties. Osborne County has been moved into the drought watch category.
