Fort Hays State University's Pi Sigma Alpha hosted a debate featuring two student-led political groups.

The annual debate between FHSU Young Democrats and FHSU College Republicans Tuesday at the Memorial Union discussed their opinions of the other party and addressed immigration, the government shutdown, tariff policy and inflation, and voting rights.

Each team was given 90 seconds to answer the same set of pre-written questions. Teams were allowed a 30-second rebuttal if the opposing team was mentioned during a response.

Lillianna Nash, Genesis Wilson, Madison Albers, and Justice Alexander represented the FHSU Young Democrats, and Mickey Mason, Tyler Preisser, Daniel Bechle, and Hazel Frans represented the FHSU College Republicans.

The College Republicans opened by saying their goal is to promote conservative values and foster the right mindset on campus. They also dedicated the debate to Charlie Kirk, the late co-founder of Turning Point USA.

The Young Democrats opened by affirming their commitment to build a nation grounded in unity and compassion, defend human rights, bridge divides and uphold democracy as a shared promise of justice for all—not just a system of government.

So much of political discourse is about the politics of negation. Tell me something positive about the other party.

The College Republicans said they hold a deep respect for the Democratic Party, adding that they believe Democrats genuinely want what is best for the country.

"They have an undying passion for those who are in need. They have a lot of empathy, which is definitely admirable," College Republican Frans said. "I think we actually agree with the Democratic Party, and most of the country, on 80% of issues. We just have different means of getting them done."

Young Democrat Albers commended the Republicans’ dedication and civic engagement. She said that everyone on stage works each day to ensure FHSU, the community and the nation thrive.

"Even though we're on different sides of this stage, we're all students who care about where our future is going and what's next for us as we're the generation that will be inheriting the earth," Albers said.

Do you think that the mass deportation policy being enacted is delivering on the promise of safety to voters, or has the current administration gone too far?

Young Democrat Albers said the Trump administration’s actions have gone too far, speaking from her perspective as a second-generation immigrant and tying the issue to economic and humanitarian concerns.

"Mass deportations take away from our essential labor force; it is in agriculture and construction that we see a large number of unauthorized immigrants," she said.

College Republican Bechle said the Republicans support deporting undocumented immigrants while keeping families together, but oppose the deportation of U.S. citizens, saying it is a matter of law and national safety.

"They have committed a crime by entering the country illegally, and that is a crime that needs to be punished by returning them to their home country," Bechle said.

In a rebuttal, Albers said Bechle's statement contradicts itself.

"[College Republicans] mentioned that they are against sending citizens back, especially legal citizens, but the idea of keeping families together, but still deporting entire families does just that," she said.

College Republican Mason blamed Democrats, calling it “the Schumer shutdown,” and said Republicans had already introduced a clean continuing resolution to keep the government operating.

"By clean continuing resolution, we mean that we are not pushing any specific Republican policy. We're not trying to change any previously passed funding legislation. We're not trying to make something that's unagreeable," Mason said.

Young Democrat Wilson blamed Republicans, calling it “the Republican shutdown,” saying they control all three branches of government and are using it to push harmful spending cuts.

"[The College Republicans] say it's a clean, continuous resolution, but [this bill] does have cuts to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act. It has cuts to a lot of things that Americans need that Democrats aren't going to agree with," Wilson said.

Do you think that tariff policy is overall beneficial to America or undermines American interests?

Young Democrat Wilson said tariffs are hurting the U.S. economy, farmers and consumers. She said that while she supports helping American companies and small businesses thrive, the nation cannot produce all the raw materials it needs.

"Tariffs don't just affect our grocery prices," she said. "They're affecting our community in every single sector and making inflation go higher.&nbsp;

Nash added, "Why would corporations create new factories and make new working laws when they can just charge you up the wazoo for child labor?"

Mason said tariff policies are still new and should be judged by their long-term effects, though he says early results appear positive. College Republican Preisser said his party supports tariffs to promote American jobs.

"It is to eliminate child labor and inhumane labor overseas. It is to level the playing field... it is so uneven the amount of tariffs that we get charged and do not charge back," Preisser said.

Frans added, "We are seeing an incredible influx of trade deals with all these countries that want to avoid tariffs. If they do not want tariffs, they should come to Congress to try and strike a deal."

The Kansas Legislature has passed legislation to reduce the number of days for advanced voting. Do such policies strengthen election confidence or suppress voter participation?

College Republican Frans said reducing the number of advance voting days helps maintain secure, organized elections and that those who value voting will make it a priority. Mason said that Election Day should remain the main day to vote.

"Any of these new legislation taps down on any potential voter fraud," Mason said. "Obviously, if there is an extenuating circumstance for why you can't show up in person, there should be a way for you to vote by mail or the associated policy there."

Young Democrat Nash said cutting back on advance voting days suppresses voter turnout, especially among working-class voters. She suggested giving people time off from work on Election Day. Albers said that students and people with disabilities are more vulnerable to being disenfranchised.

"Fort Hays does not have any official policy excusing you from class for voting in elections," she said.

Several audience questions were submitted during the debate, some of which were directed more toward one team than the other. Both teams responded under the same time and rebuttal rules.

Should unborn children be granted the same right to life and legal protection as individuals who are already born?

Young Democrat Nash said granting "unborn fetuses" the same rights as "living fetuses" would create government loopholes, including complications with child support laws. Young Democrat Albers said that the 14th Amendment has already settled the issue.

"The first words are 'all persons born.' Our founders and framers laid this out clearly for us. This has been decided," Albers said.

College Republican Frans said unborn children are humans who deserve rights and protections.  She cited the Declaration of Independence, saying that people cannot pursue liberty or happiness without first having the right to life.

"I also noticed that the [Young Democrats] couldn't determine whether to call the child in the womb a fetus or a child. They called it both because you know deep down that they are a child," Frans said.

Various members of the Young Democrats used differing terms discussing the issue, referring to unborn children as “unborn fetuses,” “unborn child” and “child.”

Why do conservatives support widespread gun ownership despite mass shootings?

College Republican Mason cited the Second Amendment and said any individual has the right to own firearms, while also supporting closing "gun show loopholes." Bechle said that mass shootings are more closely linked to mental health issues.

"I think both sides agree that we need to restructure our mental health system," Bechle said. "Obviously, there can be a lot of contributing factors, but restructuring that mental health system can be quintessential to the idea of mass shootings."

Young Democrat Wilson said mass shootings continue to claim children’s lives and said that Republicans’ focus on mental health is inconsistent with their policies.

"They want to defund programs that will make everyone in America have access to mental health care. That is part of Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act," she said. "Yes, we have a right to the Second Amendment, but there should be magazine limits, red line laws, places to get background checks and you have to take classes to get these weapons."

Next November, Kansans will vote on whether or not we should abandon our current Kansas Supreme Court justice selection system in favor of directly electing judges for the Kansas Supreme Court. What impact could this have on Kansans?

Young Democrat Albers said she is a pre-law major and opposes the proposal because it would politicize the judiciary and undermine its independence.

"In theory, it sounds really good... but this means that they have to, before they decide cases, tell you their political ideologies. That's not the way our law was established to be decided," she said.

College Republican Bechle also opposed electing judges, saying they serve long terms to remain independent from political and electoral pressure.

"I would recommend that we all say no to that bill. The judicial system is supposed to be an isolated system. It's not supposed to be influenced by politics."

The Republican and Democratic parties of Ellis County sponsored the event and provided food and drinks for attendees at Cody Commons in the Memorial Union. The room was roughly half full of its maximum capacity.

FHSU hosts debate between Young Democrats, College Republicans

Sometimes as I conjure up “OK Google” or check Fox News or the 7-day weather forecast on my smart phone, all while sitting in the Walmart parking lot, I wonder how we ever survived with phones that were only made to talk on. Then it hits me; we survived quite well, thank you very much.

I remember a few years back, as I rounded the corner on the gravel road on my way to refill the deer feeder in the draw below our high-rise deer blind, there were several hundred thousand dollars of excavating equipment rebuilding the terraces and forming new waterways in the fields that surround our blind. It looked as though our deer hunting could be permanently interrupted there that year, so I scouted out another property on which we have deer hunting permission. In front of that property was a wheat field that was traveled frequently by deer heading for the pond and trees on the property. I found a spot in a sharp corner of the field where it appeared deer were jumping the fence and entering the small woodlot. There was no blind built there and no good spot to set up a temporary blind to overlook that corner. The best option appeared to be the overhanging limbs of a cedar tree seventy yards away. I remember wondering aloud how I would ever survive not having a blind to hunt from, when it suddenly hit me; I had harvested more deer from a folding camp chair tucked beneath a cedar tree than from any other way, and again, I had survived quite well, thank you very much.

For those of you new to deer hunting that don’t have a blind from which to hunt, or for those of you wanting to try hunting deer for the first time but are not sure how to proceed without a blind, let me give you some tips from my experience.

Mr. Webster defines the word camouflage as “a disguise or deception; to disguise in order to conceal.” Camouflage does not have to make something or someone entirely disappear, it just has to make them blend in, and it does that by breaking up their outline. Examples of that would be sitting against a tree or sitting behind or under some broken overhanging limbs. Both choices camouflage you by breaking up the outline of your body. Joyce harvested her first deer ever as she sat on a camp chair behind a log in a big thick tree row. My point is that in the absence of a blind of some description, nature will provide you everything you need if you just learn to see it.

Not to sound over-simplistic here, but the most important element of hunting is to position yourself where there is game. So, when deciding upon a deer hunting location, choose a spot near a well used deer trail, where deer enter and exit a woodlot, etc. If you’re bow hunting, you want to be as close to the trail as possible, but if rifle hunting, choose a spot away from the trail seventy-five to a hundred yards or so. Then pay attention to where the sun will be in relation to you. You do not want the sun shining directly on you or in your eyes when it rises or sets, making it hard to see ahead of you as it shines into your eyes or lighting you up like a Christmas tree as it shines on you. Then check the wind direction, and try to position yourself where the prevailing north and west wind will blow your scent away from the trail. Next, look around you for anything that will conceal your form, like a broken-over or uprooted tree, a tree with large broken limbs that hang to the ground or a big cedar tree with long outstretched branches. Once you have found a natural blind, figure out how best to use it. Prune and remove limbs and branches until you can tuck yourself into whatever concealment you’ve chosen. Prune

away only enough to allow you entrance and to give yourself an open shooting lane. Use your imagination and move limbs and branches around if necessary to accomplish what you need. If you are firearm hunting, find a way to support your firearm. If none exists naturally, a couple 1x2’s bolted together near one end opens up into an “x” to make a cheap and dandy shooting stick to cradle your gun. Your seat can be whatever you want. If you’re young you can probably get away with sitting on a log or a bucket, but my choice is a cheap folding camp chair that gives me a back to lean against. It’s not always possible, but choosing to tuck yourself in amongst the branches of a big cedar tree will often help protect you from the north and west wind also.

There are still plenty of ways to conceal yourself to harvest a Kansas deer without a hunting blind or tree stand. Be creative; tree limbs stacked against a fence, a piece of camouflage fabric stretched around some fence posts, even digging yourself down into an old round hay bale at the edge of a field will all fill the bill. And by the way, sitting amongst the cradling limbs of a cedar tree, or in a spot carved out of an old round hay bale will offer great scent concealment also. The end result might even be more fulfilling knowing you used what God provided to fill your freezer. Continue to Explore Kansas Outdoors!

Explore Kansas Outdoors: Deer hunting the old-fashioned way

The Ellis County Farm Bureau Association recently hosted its annual Ellis County Kids Ag Day, welcoming area fourth-grade students to learn about the importance of agriculture and its role in everyday life. The event brought together local producers, businesses, and volunteers to provide a fun, hands-on learning experience centered around Ellis County’s strong agricultural heritage.

Students spent the day rotating through a variety of educational stations covering topics such as livestock care, crop production, water conservation, dairy and milking, farm safety, and the role of modern technology in agriculture. Presenters included local farmers, ag industry representatives, and members of the Fort Hays State University Collegiate Farm Bureau and FHSU Agriculture Department, who helped facilitate learning for students through interactive demonstrations.

“The goal of Kids Ag Day is to help students understand where their food comes from,” said Kayler Wiebke, Ellis County Farm Bureau coordinator. “Agriculture touches every part of our daily lives, and this event allows students to connect what they learn in the classroom to the people and processes that make it possible.”

The event not only provides valuable educational experiences for youth but also strengthens community connections between local agriculture and future generations.

The Ellis County Farm Bureau extends a special thank-you to the Copper family for the use of their farm, Pa’s Pumpkin Patch, as the host site for this two-day event. Their generosity provided the perfect setting for students to experience agriculture up close.

Rodrigo Perez Gonzalez named Respiratory Therapist of the Year

The Docking Institute of Public Affairs at Fort Hays State University has released the <a href="https://www.fhsu.edu/docking/Kansas-Speaks/2025-kansas-speaks-report_final-10-24-2025.pdf">report </a>from their 2025 Kansas Speaks public opinion survey. This survey, conducted each fall since 2009, covers questions from satisfaction with political officials and institutions to attitudes on public policy issues like water conservation.

Kansas Speaks data is weighted—statistical adjustments used to ensure that the pool of respondents better resemble the state population—proportionally to mirror Kansans on gender, age, education, geographic location (rural-urban), and partisan identity. This weighting is especially important because the average respondent is more likely to be older, more educated, whiter, and female than the average voter.

Since 2016, the average respondent is also statistically less likely to be conservative or Republican. For the first time, this year Kansas Speaks adjusted their methodology and weighted for partisan identity. As a result, the 2025 Kansas Speaks data should closely track Kansans’ attitudes.

Despite Kansas’s reputation as a reliably red state in presidential elections, the 2025 Kansas Speaks survey reveals a remarkable divergence between national partisan preferences and state-level approval. Governor Laura Kelly stands out as the most popular political figure or institution among Kansans, outperforming not only the Republican-controlled Kansas Legislature, but also President Donald Trump and Congress.

This year’s survey—methodologically refined to better reflect the state’s partisan composition—shows that Kelly’s approval rating sits right at 47%, while Trump’s sits at 43.5%, the Kansas Legislature at 34%, and Congress even lower st 21.4%. These numbers suggest that Kansans are not simply voting along party lines; they are evaluating leaders based on performance, pragmatism, and responsiveness to state needs.

Kelly’s popularity is especially notable given the political headwinds she faces. As a Democrat governing a state with a Republican supermajority in the legislature, she has frequently used her veto power to block legislation she views as fiscally irresponsible or ideologically extreme. Yet rather than alienating voters, this assertiveness appears to have bolstered her reputation as a steady, principled leader.

Moreover, the survey shows that Kansans support a range of policy positions that align with Kelly’s platform, including:

● Legalization of medical (70.4%) and recreational (58.8%) marijuana

● Access to abortion procedures (59.5%)

These findings suggest that Kelly’s policy priorities are broadly popular—even in a state where Republican identity remains strong.

In an era of deep national polarization, Kelly’s leadership offers a compelling case study in how state-level governance can transcend partisan divides. Her success underscores a critical lesson for next year’s governor’s race: Kansans are not just red or blue—they are pragmatic, policy-minded, and willing to reward leaders who reflect their values and deliver results.

The 95th Annual 4-H Achievement Banquet was held on October 25, 2025, at the Ellis County Fairgrounds in Hays, honoring Ellis County 4-H members. The event was attended by 137 4-H members, their families, and special guests. The banquet, sponsored by the Ellis County 4-H Council, recognized the achievements of all local 4-H members, leaders, and supporters.

Before the evening’s recognitions began, attendees enjoyed a lively Hula-Hooping Contest that brought plenty of laughter and friendly competition. Participants paid $1 to enter and competed in four age divisions: Juniors (8 and younger), Intermediates (9–13), Seniors (14–18), and Adults (19 and older). Contestants showcased their best hula-hooping skills to see who could keep their hoop spinning the longest, with the last participant standing in each division taking home bragging rights and a prize generously donated by Pat and Diane Kuhn. Winners included Tucker Neher, Brynlee Walter, Audrey Yarmer and Janelle Bott.

Each 4-H club also recognized outstanding members for their achievements this year. Outstanding Seniors and Juniors recognized by each club include:

Big Creek Astros: Isaac Moreno and Brody Armbrister

Buckeye Junior Farmers: Keeli Kimzey and Audrey Yarmer

Ellis Sunflowers: Colton Metzler and Clara Still

Gemini Juniors: Mariella Dreiling and Ashlynn Erickson

Good Hope: Jaiden Pfannenstiel and Jacob Leiker

Shooting Sports: Morgan Munsch and Eli Meis

Victoria Vikings: Ella Neher and Esther Neher

Among the club honorees, Mariella Dreiling and Morgan Munsch were named overall Senior winners, while Jacob Leiker and Eli Meis were named overall Junior winners.

The purple club seal is the highest possible level a 4-H club can achieve in the Kansas 4-H program. In order to attain a purple seal this year, clubs had to meet 18-21 of the listed goals. Purple Club Seals awards were presented to the following clubs: Buckeye Jr. Farmers, Ellis Sunflowers, and Shooting Sports.

Keeli Kimzey and Lizzy Vajnar received the National ‘I Dare You’ Leadership Award, recognizing personal integrity, balanced living, and leadership potential. Each received a copy of Danforth’s inspirational book I Dare You. Keeli is described by her reference as “an extremely gifted and motivated young woman” and “an incredibly kind leader and role model.” Lizzy’s reference notes she is “always pleasant, easy to work with, and acts mature and professional during public events.”

The Kansas Key Award, presented to the top 10% of Kansas 4-H members demonstrating exceptional leadership, was awarded to Keeli Kimzey. Recipients must complete four years in the 4-H Leadership project and achieve nine of eleven state leadership goals.

Keeli Kimzey and Lizzy Vajnar were also named 2025 Rosemary Smith 4-H Scholarship recipients. The award, given in memory of longtime 4-H leader Rosemary Smith, recognizes members who have significantly contributed to promoting 4-H at multiple levels. Keeli has served in leadership roles within the Buckeye Junior Farmers and coached the Special Olympics Show at the Kansas State Fair. Lizzy has served as Ellis County 4-H Council Treasurer, participated with the Cottonwood Extension District 4-H Water Ambassadors, and held leadership positions in the Good Hope and Growing Leaders 4-H Clubs.

Intermediates receiving 1st Gold Certificates for their Project Record books were Brynlee Walter – Beef, Foods and Nutrition, Photography and Sheep, Cannon Vajnar – Entomology, Audrey Yarmer – Health &amp; Wellness and Poultry, Karci Kimzey – Horse. Senior division 1st Golds include Lizzy Vajnar - Communications, Keeli Kimzey- Horse, and Faith Schmeidler- Leadership. The Senior winners will have the opportunity to advance to the NW Area competition in January.

Each 4-H Club in the county has the opportunity to nominate a business and an individual who they feel have gone above and beyond the call of duty to help Ellis Co. 4-H. The Ellis Co. 4-H Council makes the final decision on who to recognize as a “Friend of 4-H”.

This year’s individual Friend of 4-H is Amy Bainter, nominated by the Victoria Vikings and Ellis Sunflowers clubs. Amy dedicates countless hours running the 4-H Food Stand at the Ellis County Fair, mentoring members in food safety, customer service, and responsibility. Her leadership fosters an environment where youth can learn, grow, and take pride in their contributions, making her an invaluable member of the 4-H community. Amy is truly a Friend of 4-H for the Ellis Co. 4-H Program!

This year’s business Friend of 4-H is Ellis County Farm Bureau, nominated by the Ellis Sunflowers 4-H Club. Ellis County Farm Bureau is an incredible friend to the 4-H program. By sponsoring the livestock auction meal, they help incentivize prospective buyers to see the hard work the kids have put into their projects. Providing water all week for the 4-Hers is a small but meaningful way to show the kids, “we are thinking of you.” They also support many “Ag in the Classroom” projects throughout the county, helping young people understand the work of farmers and ranchers. For these reasons, Ellis County Farm Bureau is highly deserving of being named the 2025 Business Friend of 4-H.

The Beyond Ready Wildcat recognition honors 8th grade 4-H members for their commitment to leadership, service, and personal growth. This year, 23 Ellis Co. 4-H members were recognized for demonstrating the skills and character developed through their 4-H experiences, qualities that prepare them for success in high school, college, and life. The recognition also highlights their connection to Kansas State University, where many may continue their journey as Wildcats. Each recipient received a letter and certificate signed by K-State President Richard Linton and a Willie the Wildcat pin in recognition of their readiness for the future. Kansas 4-H, as part of K-State’s land-grant mission, is proud to celebrate these youth who embody responsibility, curiosity, and a commitment to “make the best better.”

All Ellis County 4-H members present received a certificate of completion for the 2024-2025 4-H Program Year. First-year Cloverbuds (youth ages 5 and 6) received a pin lanyard, while second-year Cloverbuds were awarded a special Cloverbud pin. Those who met the criteria were also awarded membership pins based on their years and level of involvement in local and statewide 4-H activities. Club leaders and Shooting Sports instructors were recognized for their dedication to the program. ROBERTSON: 2025 4-H Achievement Banquet

First Call for Help of Ellis County is planning its annual “Homes 4 The Holidays Carnival Night” for children.

 While the event is especially geared for ages 2 to 12, “any ages are welcome as we will have games and concessions, too,” said Macey Pfeifer, First Call’s executive director.

The fundraising event will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, at the Hays Recreation Commission, 1105 Canterbury Dr. The night will also include inflatables and raffle prizes, Pfeifer said.

The cost is $10 per wristband or a maximum cost of $25 for families with three or more children. Only cash and Venmo will be accepted for payment. Concessions will be available for purchase.

 All participants must wear socks, Pfeifer said. Socks will be available for purchase for those who forget to wear them.

“Proceeds from this event will directly support individuals and families in securing safe, stable housing by covering the first month’s rent and/or deposit costs.&nbsp;Many people are currently living in unsafe or unhealthy conditions but are unable to move simply because they can’t afford the upfront costs required,” Pfeifer said.

“Our goal is to be a helping hand—removing that financial barrier and ensuring those in need have the opportunity to transition into a safer, more livable home where they can begin to rebuild and thrive.”

Helping with the event is a team of Leadership 310 students from Fort Hays State University. They are Mika Zimmerman, Hays junior; Matthew Berner, Hays junior; Thomas Pendergast, Hays sophomore; Anthony Arial, Hays junior; and Sabrina Adkins, Hays junior.

Pfeifer said, “Home 4 The Holidays Carnival Night is the perfect family-friendly event that won’t break the bank—especially for those with multiple children. But it’s more than just games, prizes, and memories—it’s a night that gives back.

First Call schedules annual carnival night for children

Kansas State University will bring together researchers, producers and industry experts to address the challenges and opportunities of raising forage in a limited-water environment.

The <a href="https://www.wkrec.org/events/forage_conference/western_kansas_forage_conference.html">K-State Forage Conference</a> will be held Nov. 5 at the K-State Southwest Research-Extension Center in Garden City. The one-day event will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is free to attend.

Sessions will deliver fast-paced, practical updates on forage management, soil health, fertility, risk protection and marketing, with time for questions and peer discussion. Lunch is provided thanks to conference sponsors.

“Forage is the backbone of western Kansas agriculture,” said John Holman, K-State cropping systems agronomist. “Our cattle industry depends on reliable hay and silage production, and this conference is designed to provide the research-based information producers can trust—especially when every acre and every inch of water counts.”

Kansas produced more than 5 million tons of hay in 2022 grown on 2.4 million acres, ranking third among all states, and forage contributes more than $536 million annually to the state’s economy.

Holman noted that annual forages -- such as forage sorghum, sudangrass, triticale and wheat -- are especially valuable in the High Plains because of their drought tolerance, and flexibility for grazing, hay or silage. Some hybrids can be ready to graze within 4-6 weeks of planting, providing timely feed sources throughout the year.

“These crops allow producers to fill forage gaps and adapt to changing water availability,” Holman said. “But they also come with challenges, so understanding management strategies is critical.”

· Soil impacts of haying, grazing and cover crops — Augustine Obour, K-State soil scientist.

· Managing prussic acid in forages — Scott Staggenborg, seed and product development consultant.

· Forage fertility management — Logan Simon, K-State southwest area agronomist.

· Insurance and price protection tools — Jenny Ifft, Flinchbaugh Agricultural Policy chair.

· Invasive grass management — Keith Harmoney, K-State range scientist.

Additional sessions are planned on summer legumes, seeding rates, and a Kansas Livestock Association industry update.

TOPEKA –&nbsp;With just a few safety steps, you can&nbsp;prevent children from going bump in the night&nbsp;to ensure a happy Halloween. Injuries can be scary, but the good news is they are preventable. Safe Kids Kansas, the Kansas Poison Center and the Kansas State Fire Marshal remind families to make safety part of your fall festivity planning.

Child pedestrian injuries are more likely on Halloween than on any other night of the year. Drivers need to slow down and be extra alert, especially in neighborhoods, as more children will be on the streets and sidewalks. Kids may be focused on gathering candy and the excitement of the holiday rather than being careful while crossing streets.

Review safety rules with your kids before they leave the house. Children younger than age 12 should not cross streets on Halloween without an adult or responsible teenager. If your children are mature enough to be out without supervision, make sure they keep to familiar areas that are well-lit, stick to a pre-planned route and trick-or-treat in groups. Carry a cell phone in case of an emergency but pay attention to your surroundings and don’t be distracted by texting or talking on the phone.

“On Halloween night, it’s important to see and be seen,”&nbsp;Cherie Sage, Safe Kids Kansas, said.&nbsp;“Carry a flashlight and have your trick-or-treaters wear reflective tape or stickers on costumes and treat bags.”

Remind children to be careful with candy. It’s hard to resist the temptation to dive right into treats, but it is best to check sweets before children are allowed to eat them. Only eat treats in original and unopened wrappers. Also, be aware that kids are in a candy-seeking mode, so keep medicine locked up and away and keep the Poison Help number programmed into your phone: 1-800-222-1222.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, nearly half of home structure fires happened because decorations were too close to a heat source. Most of these incidents were started by candles. Play it safe and use battery-powered candles or lights. Remember to ensure your family has working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home, both inside and outside of every sleeping area.

“Our goal is to keep every trick-or-treater safe this Halloween,”&nbsp;Mark Engholm, Kansas Fire Marshal, said. “Use battery-powered candles, watch for trip hazards and remind kids to stay alert and visible while out collecting treats.”

Daylight saving time ends on Sunday, Nov. 2, and the American Red Cross encourages everyone to test their smoke alarms as they&nbsp;turn their clocks back to make sure the devices are working.

“Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half as you only have about two minutes to safely get out,” said Jane Blocher, Executive Director of the Red Cross of Greater Kansas. “Every second counts when there’s a home fire and the sooner an alarm alerts you to a fire, the sooner you can get to a safer place. When daylight saving time ends this weekend, test your smoke alarms to help prevent a tragedy in your home.”

This year, local Red Cross volunteers responded to help over 500 people in Greater Kansas affected by 150 home fires, which account for most of the about 65,000 disasters that the Red Cross responds to annually across the country.
