Sugar Collective is helping women, from busy moms to working professionals, feel confident with its range of styles in Hays.

Owner Sammy McBride opened the boutique Monday at Big Creek Crossing, drawing on 15 years of retail experience and naming the store after her grandmother, Sug Pollard.

"The way my grandma has influenced the store is her larger-than-life personality. She walks into a room, and she is just herself. ... Our tagline is everyday style and unapologetically you," McBride said.

The boutique carries everything from athleisure to Fort Hays State University apparel, with a focus on helping women across all generations feel authentically themselves.

McBride said Sugar Co. stands out for its selection of exclusive brands, including Kendra Scott, FP Movement, Nickel &amp; Suede, and Mary Elizabeth Co., a local jewelry line.

"We really believe that the experience here should feel like shopping with a friend or shopping with your most stylish bestie," McBride said.

McBride's 35th birthday is this Saturday, and she is inviting everyone to join the celebration with a DIY soda bar at the store.

McBride said she is grateful to her supporters, including Grow Hays, the Bank of Hays, Big Creek Crossing and her family.

"I've been a part of the retail world in Hays for such a long time, and I'm excited to still be a part of the community," McBride said.

McBride is originally from Topeka and came to western Kansas to attend Barton County Community College before going on to earn a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing from FHSU in 2012.

She worked at Buckle before spending almost 12 years with <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/e35818e9-fbc6-46a7-84c0-d55ae0287f54">Bling</a>, the former clothing store that previously occupied Sugar Co.'s current location.

Sugar Collective brings timeless elegance to Hays

Hays city commissioners  will vote on another step toward the construction of new housing in west Hays at their meeting on Thursday.

The commission will consider a resolution and an engineering services agreement to establish a benefit district for&nbsp;32 lots in the Covenant Estates First Addition.

The developer,&nbsp;Covenant&nbsp;Land &amp; Developing Inc., has petitioned the city for street, stormwater, water and&nbsp;sanitary sewer improvements through the use of a benefit district.

The engineer’s estimate for total construction costs of the improvements is $2.9 million. Seventy percent&nbsp;of the costs will be special assessed, with&nbsp;the remaining 30% being paid by the developer.&nbsp;No city capital would be expended.

A $221,000 engineering agreement with&nbsp;Sloan Engineering and Consulting, Hays, has been prepared for the infrastructure improvements in Phase 1.

Don Scheibler, police chief, will present a request from High Plains Mental Health Center for a portion of opioid settlement funds. The state distributes the opioid funds to municipalities and must be allocated for opioid and substance use disorder abatement.

City staff recommended the mental health center be granted $45,481 to purchase social detoxification treatment chairs and infusion pumps for its new&nbsp;<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/c63c3c89-fd3c-4923-8d01-509e92168ce0">Crisis Intervention Center</a>&nbsp;under construction in Hays. The center will serve 28 western Kansas counties.&nbsp;

City commission to vote on next steps for new housing in west Hays

SHAWNEE COUNTY– Law enforcement are investigating a Kansas Sex Offender, with over a dozen previous convictions in Ellis County, on drug allegations after a traffic stop.

Just before 3:30p.m., August 8, a K-9 Unit with the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on a black 1997 Ford F-150 pickup truck in the 3400 block of NW Frontage Road for an improper turn, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

During the investigation, the deputy found illegal narcotics.

Michael R. Anderson, 43, of Topeka, was arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges that include Possession of an opiate, opium, narcotic or certain stimulant Use/possess with intent to use drug paraphernalia

Anderson has been a registered sex offender since 2016 after ten convictions for sexual exploitation of a child in Ellis County, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections. He also has previous convictions for criminal threat and for drugs.

This year’s 5th annual Hays Public Library Foundation Fundraiser will feature Kansas basketball great Jackie Stiles as guest speaker. The Wine &amp; Cheese event will be on October 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Hays Public Library.

The fundraiser will begin with a wine and cheese social hour, followed by an impactful presentation from Stiles. From her hometown of Claflin, to a professional career in the WNBA, Stiles inspired millions as she rewrote the women’s basketball record books. Stiles held the NCAA women’s scoring record for 16 years and was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016. 

Stiles continues to reach people of all ages through personal training, basketball camps, and public speaking.

The Hays Public Library Foundation was established in 2001 to serve as a source for funding emergent and unexpected needs and events associated with the library. Most recently the Foundation’s fundraising efforts covered the cost to remodel the Kansas Room, which was completed this spring.

Kansas basketball great to speak at Hays Public Library Foundation fundraiser

Grow Hays, in association with the Network Kansas E-Community Partnership, announces the ‘Think Like an Entrepreneur’ - Ice House Entrepreneurship Program offered in Ellis County. Sessions will be held over eight weeks, Wednesdays from September 17 through November 6. The goal of the course is to teach participants to develop an entrepreneurial mindset.

Taught by Kris Munsch, a certified Ice House facilitator, this interactive 8-week program provides practical entrepreneurial lessons through first-hand experiences of successful, real-life entrepreneurs. 

Based on the book,&nbsp;Who Owns the Ice House, this curriculum consists of case studies along with individual assignments, assessments, and discussion topics. This popular course is offered only a handful of times per year across the state and Grow Hays is excited to have local resident Kris Munsch teaching the course.

The program fee runs $150 for adults and $75 for students and covers catered meals. We are offering an early bird price of $100 if signed up and paid by September 5. Registration is limited, and in-county attendees will have priority to fill the course. Out-of-county attendees are welcome to register but may be put on a waiting list. 

The deadline to register is Thursday, September 11, 2025.

'Think Like an Entrepreneur/Ice House' program launches in September

The Fort Hays State University Foundation welcomes four new members to its board of trustees – Ashley Adorante, Shane DeWald, Chelsey Ladd, and Dr. Ryan Ruda.

“Our board of trustees are a vital part of our Tiger family,” said FHSU Foundation President and CEO Jason Williby. “Their dedication to giving back and helping our students succeed is truly inspiring. We’re excited to have these individuals on our board.”

Ashley Adorante, ’01, Overland Park

In her current role as Outreach Coordinator, Adorante works across Kansas and western Missouri to promote cancer prevention and education for the Masonic Cancer Alliance, the outreach network of The University of Kansas Cancer Center.&nbsp;Adorante completed her bachelor’s in physical education at FHSU and later attended the University of Kansas for her master’s degree in community health.

In 2020, Adorante was recognized by the FHSU Alumni Office as the Nita M. Landrum Award recipient, which honors individuals who have provided sustained volunteer service for the betterment of the Fort Hays State Alumni community or the university.

Shane DeWald serves as executive director of the Blue Valley Recreation Commission in Overland Park. With more than two decades of leadership in parks and recreation, he has helped to expand access and engagement across all age groups. DeWald holds a bachelor’s from FHSU in business administration and physical education, a master’s in sports administration from Wichita State University, and is a Certified Park and Recreation Professional. In addition, he is a former pole vaulter with the FHSU track and field team.

DeWald’s expertise includes sports and recreation management, strategic planning, and community partnership development. He is enthusiastic about public service and dedicated to building healthy, inclusive, and active communities through innovative programming and collaborative leadership.

Chelsey Ladd serves as the Director of Constituent Services for U.S. Senator Jerry Moran, working out of Hays. Ladd obtained her degrees at FHSU in 2008 when she double majored in political science and organizational leadership. She has worked alongside Senator Moran for nearly 17 years in various roles, using her skills to continue serving the people of Kansas.

She brings years of experience in public service and community engagement, including leadership roles with the Kiwanis Club of Hays, as the vice president of the board of directors for The Bricks in Downtown Hays, and as the past chair of the FHSU Alumni Board. A recipient of the 2020 Rising Star Award from The Chamber in Hays, Ladd is devoted to supporting her community in any way she can.

Dr. Ryan Ruda, ’97, ’99, Holcomb

As president and CEO of Garden City Community College, Dr. Ryan Ruda plays an important role in shaping the college’s vision, fostering student success, and strengthening community partnerships. Since 1999, Ruda has held various roles throughout the college, including Dean of Student Services and Vice President of Student Services.

Ruda began his educational career at Fort Hays State, completing a bachelor’s in justice studies and a master’s in counseling and guidance. He went on to earn an Educational Doctorate in community college leadership from National American University in 2018. Ruda brings a wealth of higher-education knowledge to the board and will undoubtedly help contribute to his alma mater’s mission and values.

The Foundation Board of Trustees is comprised of 43 total members, each serving a four-year term. Serving on the board is more than honorary, as these individuals participate in year-round activities that ensure the educational and financial success of Fort Hays State University and the FHSU Foundation.

Members of the Board of Trustees come from diverse educational and industry backgrounds. They represent all five academic colleges at FHSU and are located throughout the United States from coast to coast.

Adorante, DeWald, Ladd, and Ruda will join members of the FHSU Foundation board of trustees in late August for the organization’s annual business meeting. During their time on campus, trustees will get an inside view of what’s happening across Fort Hays State by touring Malloy Hall, Stroup Hall, Albertson Hall, and getting a sneak peek at the Forsyth Library renovation progress.

This work will be done during the evening hours as to limit daytime traffic interruptions.

Hays roundabouts to get new pavement markings Monday night 

Kansas Department of Transportation

The Kansas Department of Transportation plans to begin work on a series of improvement projects along portions of highways K-18 and U.S. 183 in Rooks and Ellis counties the week of Aug. 11.

The first project will involve milling and overlay on 12 miles of U.S. 183 starting at S Road north of Plainville and ending at the Ellis County line. 

Crews will then resurface approximately 13 miles of K-18 between Palco and Plainville. 

The final project will continue milling and overlay on 15 miles U.S. 183 in Ellis County beginning at the Rooks County line and ending near 55th&nbsp;Street in Hays.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane and directed by flaggers and a pilot car through the areas where crews are actively working. Motorists should plan for delays not exceeding 15 minutes during daylight hours.

KDOT expects the projects to be completed in late October, conditions permitting.

Bettis Construction and Asphalt, of Topeka, is the primary contractor for the projects with a combined contract cost of $7.2 million.

Highway construction projects set in Rooks, Ellis counties

KANSAS CITY —Law enforcement are investigating a four-vehicle crash that sent three people to the hospital.

Just before 7p.m. Tuesday, a black Chevrolet Malibu was eastbound on 18th Street at a high rate of speed, according to KCPD Officer Alayna Gonzalez.

 At 18th and Indiana, The Chevrolet struck a northbound Toyota Highlander.&nbsp; The Chevrolet then struck a westbound Dodge Durango. The impact forced the Toyota into a rotational spin and redirected the Toyota into the westbound lanes of 18th Street. 

As the Toyota was spinning, it struck a red Ford Taurus and a black Chrysler 200 that were both traveling westbound on 18th Street before coming to rest. 

EMS transported the driver of the Toyota to a local hospital with critical injuries. The rear seat juvenile passenger of the Toyota was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. The passenger of the Chevrolet was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. 

All of the drivers and or passengers of the Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford, and Chrysler fled the scene of the collision prior to the arrival of the responding officers. 

The driver of the Toyota was in critical, but stable condition Wednesday morning, according to Gonzalez.&nbsp; The rear seat juvenile passenger of the Toyota and the passenger of the Chevrolet are both in stable condition. Police released no additional details.

KCPD: 4 drivers fled after 5-vehicle critical injury crash

LAWRENCE, Kan.—&nbsp;Just days before the Kansas Jayhawks football season kickoff against Fresno State on Aug. 23, the University of Kansas announced an unprecedented gift from alumnus David G. Booth of Austin, Texas. The extraordinary gift, amounting to approximately $300 million, is the largest in Kansas Athletics and University of Kansas history, and is among the largest single gifts in the history of college athletics, according to a media release from the university.&nbsp;

Booth, a graduate of both Lawrence High School and KU, is an investing legend and founder of Dimensional Fund Advisors — a global investment firm that manages $853 billion in assets as of June 30, 2025. Booth's visionary gift includes a $75 million challenge to other donors that launches the next phase of progress on the Gateway District and David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. The remainder of his commitment will generate a stream of income that will strengthen Kansas Athletics across generations.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"David's unprecedented generosity is transformative now and for our future," said KU Athletics Director and Vice Chancellor&nbsp;<a href="https://kuathletics.com/staff-directory/travis-goff/166">Travis Goff</a>. "It accelerates phase II of the Gateway District and the new 'Booth' and inspires others to step up and join in completing this vision. It's not just the scale of the gift that is remarkable, but what it will accomplish. Booth's commitment will propel the Gateway District's next phase, which adds to private and civic investment for a new hotel, additional retail and restaurant spaces, student housing, improved parking and an outdoor event plaza.

The remainder of Booth's gift will allow Kansas Athletics to be strategic, innovative and maintain a leadership position in college athletics. With the advent of revenue sharing and the continued changes in NCAA and conference dynamics, his generosity will help enable KU to take the next step in cementing itself as a national leader in college athletics.

When he was a child, Booth's parents, Gilbert and Betty Booth, moved the family from their home in Garnett, Kansas, to Lawrence at 1931 Naismith Drive, near Allen Fieldhouse. The family gathered regularly to listen to KU games on the radio, glued to Max Falkenstien's iconic voice. At the age of 13, Booth attended his first game through the Boy Scouts, working as an usher in the football stadium. He later worked basketball games at Allen Fieldhouse by selling popcorn in the stands.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Lawrence High graduate attended KU, earning both a Bachelor of Arts in Economics in 1968 and a Master of Science in Business in 1969 before earning his Master of Business Administration from the University of Chicago in 1971.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Booth founded Dimensional Fund Advisors in 1981 to apply the principles of financial science to practical investment solutions. Booth started Dimensional in collaboration with several others from the University of Chicago, including Booth's mentor, former professor and Nobel Laureate Eugene Fama, and classmate Rex Sinquefield, who co-founded the firm. Booth and Dimensional have been recognized for helping transform the industry toward more transparent, low-cost and data-driven solutions for investors. That story was recently profiled by Academy Award winning director Errol Morris in the film "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T98825bzcKw" target="_blank">Tune Out the Noise</a>."&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Booth's landmark gift is the most recent in his long legacy of support at KU, helping transform athletics and its impact for the university. Booth provided a foundational gift of $50 million in 2017 to kick off renovations at the stadium, which was named for him in 2018. In 2010, he donated James Naismith's original rules of basketball to the university, a top attraction at the Booth Family Hall of Athletics, which he and his family provided $5 million for in 2004, followed by $4 million for subsequent improvements. His philanthropy is legendary and extends across areas, including the arts and academics. In 2008, he provided a gift valued at $300 million to the University of Chicago School of Business, where he earned his MBA. The school was named the University of Chicago Booth School of Business in his honor.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

With KU's football season opener around the corner, Booth's excitement to get back to the stadium is growing.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

A Kansas state representative is calling on Gov. Laura Kelly to address allegations of misconduct involving his predecessor, now serving on the Kansas State Fair Board.

Rep. Kyler Sweely, R-Hutchinson, said in a letter to Kelly on Monday that Jason Probst, acted “highly inappropriately” toward him during the Boots and Bling fundraiser for the Kansas Fairgrounds Foundation on Saturday. Sweely defeated Probst in the 2024 election for the 102nd District seat. Kelly appointed Probst to the Fair Board on July 7.

“Mr. Probst, visibly intoxicated, made disturbing sexual and homophobic comments toward me in front of attendees, and had to be physically held back due to escalating, aggressive behavior,” Sweely wrote in a statement to Hutch Post on Tuesday.

When asked, Jason Probst replied to the accusations saying in a statement, "Kyler Sweely is doing all he can to deflect from his history of abuse and dishonesty. If his feelings get hurt so easily perhaps public service isn’t for him."&nbsp;

In the letter to Gov. Kelly, Sweely said the encounter was not an isolated incident, claiming it was the second time in the past month that Probst had directed a “rant filled with homophobic comments” at him. He urged the governor to “immediately review this matter and take appropriate action” regarding Probst’s continued role on the board.

Kelly’s office confirmed receipt of Sweely’s letter.

Kan. lawmaker asks governor to remove rival from State Fair Board

WASHINGTON (AP) — President&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;said Monday that he expected to determine mere moments into&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-war-trump-deadline-putin-423e6a28df5186a48b7383eae41c11c2">his meeting</a>&nbsp;with Russian leader&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/vladimir-putin">Vladimir Putin</a>&nbsp;this week whether it would be possible to work out a deal to halt the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/russia-ukraine">war in Ukraine</a>.

“At the end of that meeting, probably the first two minutes, I’ll know exactly whether or not a deal can be made,” Trump said at a White House press conference that he called to announce plans for a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-washington-crime-national-guard-homelessness-655bc22834223c7dc93115bbcb2b215c">federal takeover of Washington's police force</a>&nbsp;to help combat crime.

He said he thought Friday's sitdown with Putin in Alaska would be "really a feel-out meeting." Trump added that “it’ll be good, but it might be bad” and predicted he may say, "lots of luck, keep fighting. Or I may say, we can make a deal.”

Putin wants to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/russia-trump-summit-ukraine-war-2afea5988bdaca94cae39b7f86fa59ba">lock in Russia’s gains</a>&nbsp;since invading Ukraine in February 2022 as Trump presses for a ceasefire that has remained out of reach. Trump’s eagerness to reach a deal has&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/europe-ukraine-territory-russia-trump-putin-summit-5d2079bd13561edac7752d338ea7b93c">raised fears in Ukraine and Europe</a>&nbsp;about such an agreement favoring Russia, without sufficient input from Ukraine. Trump has alternately harshly criticized both leaders after promising — and so far failing — to swiftly end the conflict.

The Trump-Putin meeting so far isn't going to include Zelenskyy

Trump on Monday ducked repeated chances to say that he would push for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to take part in his discussions with Putin, and was especially dismissive of Zelenskyy and his need to be part of an effort to seek peace.

He said the Ukrainian president had been to “a lot of meetings” without managing to halt a war that Russia started. Trump also noted that Zelenskyy had been in power for the duration of the war and said “nothing happened” during that time. He contrasted that with Putin, who has wielded power in Russia for decades.

Trump said that, after his meeting with Putin, “The next meeting will be with Zelenskyy and Putin" but it could also be a meeting with “Putin and Zelenskyy and me.”

European allies have&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-war-trump-putin-european-statement-084569cce3a6b383325b0a8efa37bc6e">pushed for Ukraine's involvement</a>, fearful that discussions could otherwise favor Moscow.

To that point, Trump said he would call Zelenskyy and European leaders after his discussion with Putin to “tell them what kind of a deal — I’m not going to make a deal. It’s not up to me to make a deal.”

Trump spent the early part of his administration decrying Zelenskyy, even suggesting he was a dictator because his country has not held elections during the war. Zelenskyy was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-zelenskyy-oval-office-ukraine-russia-blowup-8aa63e55c859e8fea963911478c376ee">hounded out of the Oval Office</a>&nbsp;in February after Trump and Vice President JD Vance suggested he hadn't been grateful enough for U.S. support.

More recently, Trump has expressed frustration with Putin that Russia hasn't appeared to take a push for a ceasefire more seriously, and softened his tone toward Zelenskyy. His comments Monday suggested he might have had another change of heart.

“President Putin invited me to get involved,” Trump said. He noted that he thought it was “very respectful” that Putin is coming to the U.S. for Friday's meeting, instead of insisting that Trump go to Russia.

“I’d like to see a ceasefire. I’d like to see the best deal that can be made for both parties," Trump said.

The president repeated that any major agreement could involve land swaps, without elaborating. He had threatened Moscow with more economic sanctions if more isn't done to work toward a ceasefire, but suggested Monday that, should Friday's meeting be successful, he could see a day when the U.S. and Russia normalize trade relations.

Putin is expected to be unwavering in his&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/russia-trump-summit-ukraine-war-2afea5988bdaca94cae39b7f86fa59ba">demands</a>&nbsp;to keep all the territory his forces now occupy and to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO, with the long-term aim of returning it to Moscow’s sphere of influence.

Zelenskyy insists he will never consent to any formal Russian annexation of Ukrainian territory or give up a bid for NATO membership.

Putin believes he has the advantage on the ground as Ukrainian forces struggle to hold back Russian advances along the 1,000-kilometer (600-mile) front. On the front lines, few Ukrainian soldiers believe there’s an&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-war-attack-front-lines-52263396fbecbcad8138c6af0ba39cca">end in sight to the war</a>.

Europeans will prepare with a virtual meeting on Ukraine this week

With the Europeans and Ukrainians so far not invited to the summit, Germany sought to prepare by inviting Trump, Zelenskyy, the NATO chief and several other European leaders for a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/europe-ukraine-territory-russia-trump-putin-summit-5d2079bd13561edac7752d338ea7b93c">virtual meeting on Wednesday</a>.

The German chancellery said the talks would seek additional ways to pressure Russia and prepare for peace negotiations and “related issues of territorial claims and security.”

Steffen Meyer, spokesperson for German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, said the German government “has always emphasized that borders must not be shifted by force” and that Ukraine should decide its own fate “independently and autonomously."

Earlier, a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/russia-ukraine">Ukrainian</a>&nbsp;drone attack killed one person and wounded two others in a region some 260 miles (418 kilometers) east of Moscow.

Russia's Defense Ministry said its air defenses intercepted and destroyed a total of 39 Ukrainian drones overnight and Monday morning over several Russian regions as well as over the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia annexed in 2014.

KANSAS CITY —Law enforcement continue to make arrests for those involved in sideshows and related activity in Kansas City.

Last weekend police caught suspects running red lights, driving the wrong way into oncoming traffic and performing stunts on Kansas City streets, according to a social media report from the KCPD. "We're cracking down on this illegal behavior."

On Saturday night, police arrested nine suspects, towed eight vehicles, including ATVs on city streets, recovered a&nbsp;stolen vehicle, issued 51 citations, and broke up two sideshows in the making. This resulted from officers assigned to stop lawlessness on the streets and those in the Entertainment District plan.&nbsp; The Clay County Sheriff's Deputies, Missouri State Highway Patrol, Johnson County Sheriff's Deputies and Independence Police assisted.

KCPD makes more arrests for sideshows

SEDGWICK COUNTY — The search for a Kansas man on parole who was wanted in connection with a a&nbsp;fatal shooting outside Wesley Medical Center in Wichita on Monday night is over.

Robert Schoenberger, 47, died of self-inflicted gunshot wound following a standoff with police in Wichita on Tuesday afternoon, according to Police spokesman Andrew Ford.

Just after 2p.m. Tuesday, police responded to the 2300 block of North Somerset after they&nbsp;received information that Schoenberger was inside an apartment in the area.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A SWAT team was unable to get Schoenberger outside. A drone was deployed inside the apartment and found Schoenberger with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased at 4:47 p.m., according to Ford.

On Monday night a rolling disturbance between a female victim and Schoenberger, who had cut off his ankle monitor, occurred while they were in a vehicle together. 

The victim, who was driving, stopped in front of Wesley Medical Center, got out, and tried to get away from Schoenberger.&nbsp; He was still in the passenger seat, opened fire—striking the victim in the upper body.

The victim was rushed into surgery but later died from her injuries. During the gunfire, Wesley Medical Center was also struck.
