Oktoberfest in Hays opened today with a ceremony and continues through tomorrow.

Be on the lookout for "Bison on the Loose" in Hays next spring.

It's a public art project of the Heartland Community Foundation Youth Action Council to highlight the history and heritage of Ellis County.&nbsp;

At least 25 <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/07bdd861-fa34-4686-8c39-2587327f3009">life-size fiberglass bison sculptures </a>will be placed on city and private properties in Hays, Ellis and Victoria.

"They'll be painted by local and student artists in colorful ways," said Savannah Clingan.&nbsp;"Our goal is to attract tourists and residents to places of interest."

Clingan,&nbsp;Mariella Dreiling and Oaklye Wichers, Hays High School seniors, appeared before the Hays City Commission on Thursday seeking permission to install the statues in some public spaces. The city of Ellis has already given its approval.

First-priority locations requested by project donors include Municipal Park, Frontier Park, Sunrise Park, Hays Regional Airport, Downtown Pavilion and the Hays Public Library.&nbsp;

Each statue will cost $5,000, which will include its placement. The students have raised $120,000 towards their goal of $125,000 from private donations and grants.

"It generates family-friendly experiences," Wichers said. 

The students are working on an interactive app that would encourage users to visit and take pictures with each bison as a kind of scavenger hunt.

Wichers said bison were chosen by the students because in 2026 "we will celebrate 110 years since James “Scotty” Philips brought Hays’ first bison herd in 1916. This honors the city's&nbsp;historic herd and the frontier heritage."

Other themes expected to be represented include Volga Germans, the railroad, Wild West frontier, Big Creek, Fort Hays State University, native tribes, Oktoberfest, historic Fort Hays, oil and agriculture industries, fossils, sunflowers, HaysMed, veterans, downtown Hays, roundabouts, water, and bike trails.&nbsp;

All designs will go through a submission and jury&nbsp;process before approval.&nbsp;No offensive imagery,&nbsp;words or business logos will be allowed.

The painting process, under the direction of Amy&nbsp;Schmierbach, FHSU art professor, will be done at the Microfactory.

"The project really encourages collaboration between teens, local artists, Hays, TMP-Marian, Ellis and Victoria high schools, and businesses so we can all celebrate our shared heritage and culture," Dreiling said, "making it a more fun and inviting place to be in."

Expected lifespan of the statues is 15 to 20 years.&nbsp;

The commission also granted permission to the Arc of Central Plains to proceed with construction of Phase 3 of the ARC Park, 3300 Hillcrest.

Sarah Meitner, board president of Arc of Central Plains, presented the plan, which includes two shelter houses, a gazebo-type picnic pavilion and a nearby flower garden, along with two permanent cornhole courts with 10 total lanes and shaded dugouts.

The Arc of Central Plains has raised $500,000 for the construction, which will be put out to bid to local contractors. Parks Director Jeff Boyle will oversee the project.

"We want to go with the most maintenance-free we can," Boyle said.

More bison coming to Hays next spring; sculptures to celebrate history, heritage

Republican candidate for Kansas governor Stacy Rogers was in Ellis on Wednesday as part of a speaking tour with several stops in western Kansas.

Rogers has been criss-crossing the state even though the gubernatorial election is still more than a year away.

Rogers is a businesswoman from Wichita. She also served on the city council in Mt. Hope.

"The reason that I'm running is to give a voice back to the people of this state," Rogers said.

She said as she has traveled across the state, she has heard people complain they are not being heard and they do not like the choices they have been given on the ballot.

"They just don't feel they are being well represented," she said.

"We have been doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result, and that's the definition of insanity," she said. ... "We need to break that cycle to make things better in the state for the people that live here, regardless of whether they are Republican or Democrat or Libertarian. As governor, I would be governor for all of those people."

"I think we are ready for something completely different," she said.

Rogers spoke to a small group in Ellis. They expressed concerns about investment in rural communities and businesses.

Most of Ellis' downtown is in a floodplain. This has made it difficult to make repairs and upgrades to those buildings due to FEMA regulations.

Rogers said she did not think the entire state should pay for large incentive packages that will only aid one county or community. She cited the example of the incentive packages being offered to the Chiefs and Royals to relocate to Kansas.

All three of her children are adults, but two of them have learning challenges. Her children attended both public and private schools, and she also homeschooled.

"[Education] is failing across the state. You can look at the numbers. They're dismal," she said.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/1ddb7029-9e09-4f6a-8c1f-c0c5f03f27ed">The Hays school district has been advocating for increased state funding for special education. The state is not fulfilling its full obligation under the state statute, which results in local school districts being forced to pay a higher proportion of special education costs from their general funds.</a>

Rogers said she had a bad experience with a public school district. Her son is autistic, and the school district did not want to approve her son's individual education plan, which is also known as an IEP. This led her to withdraw her son from public school and homeschool him.

She said the issues with schools were not with teachers, but rather the result of decisions made by local school boards, which trickled down to students.

"I can't get behind more funding to a system that is broken and not teaching our kids well," she said.

Rogers said too much money is being spent on salaries for superintendents and administration.

Rogers said she might support a form of school choice.

She said she did not think school choice would result in the closure of public schools in small communities in western Kansas. However, it might allow students of all income levels in urban areas to choose where they want to attend. She said she thought the money should follow the student.

"I just want kids to be educated well and to be set up to be successful in their life," she said. "That is my only concern. How do we achieve that? We need to put together a plan. I am for children being educated well."

The Hays Post reporter asked Rogers about the <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/72cef8d3-79bf-4085-b070-bccbdc589f9d">R9 Ranch project</a>, which will affect long-term water availability for Hays and Russell. Rogers said she was not familiar with the R9 project, but she did discuss water issues in Kansas generally.

She agreed with one of the Ellis residents who said eastern Kansas should not be making water decisions for western Kansas, because the two areas of the state have vastly different needs.

He said some farmers are forced to use water they don't need, because if they don't use their full water allotment, they won't be able to draw as much in the following years.

Rogers said, "We are very seriously chasing the ball at this point on water preservation."&nbsp;

If elected, Rogers said she would seek to identify inefficiencies in the state budget.

"I would go through each department with a fine-toothed comb and find where those inefficiencies are, where those duplications are ... those kinds of things that we can get rid of and cut the budget without taking away value from the things that are already there," Rogers said.

"I think we are going to discover some fraud," she said. "I think we are going to discover some mismanagement."

Rogers said she would like to see reductions in property taxes, but the funds to support the state government have to come from somewhere.&nbsp;

Rogers said she would like to see a moratorium on the expansion of wind energy statewide in Kansas.

She expressed concern renewable energy companies are offering substantial sums of money for land leases. She questioned whether those leases included provisions for removing towers and cleaning up after the leases expired.

Student-athletes face unique financial challenges, especially as they balance academics, athletics, and new opportunities like NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) earnings. Financial education programs have been shown to improve budgeting habits, reduce financial stress, and increase confidence in financial decision-making.

Through this partnership, Heartland Credit Union will provide bi-monthly financial wellness workshops covering essential topics such as budgeting, student loans, smart spending, savings, and financial planning for life after college. In addition, student-athletes will receive curated eNewsletter content on subjects like investing, taxes, managing debt, and financial confidence. HCU staff will also be available for one-on-one financial counseling.

From Heartland Credit Union’s perspective, the partnership is a natural extension of its mission to empower communities through financial education.

Jana’s Campaign, an organization dedicated to preventing relationship-based violence, will have its annual fundraising gala, “Empty Place at the Table,” at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Rose Garden Banquet Hall, 2350 E. Eighth St., Hays.&nbsp;

Tickets are $50 per person and may be purchased at <a href="https://www.janascampaign.org/">janascampaign.org</a>.

“This cherished community event brings together friends and supporters to honor the life and legacy of Jana Mackey while celebrating 16 years of prevention education and impact,” Kaiti Blackburn, Jana’s Campaign executive director, said in a news release.

“The evening will reflect on the organization’s achievements in building safe, healthy communities and reaffirm their mission to prevent domestic violence, dating violence, sexual violence, and stalking through evidence-based education.”

Jana’s Campaign was founded in memory of Hays native Jana Mackey, a 25-year-old law student at the University of Kansas who lost her life to violence perpetrated by an ex-boyfriend in 2008.

The organization has presented educational programs to more than 102,000 middle school and high school students from 677 schools across 10 states, Blackburn said, all with the goal of informing young people about domestic and dating violence, sexual violence, and stalking.

“Our prevention approach creates ripple effects that extend far beyond individual students. When we teach one young person about healthy relationships, they carry that knowledge to their families, friend groups, and future relationships,” Blackburn said. “Prevention education is an investment that pays dividends for decades.”

This year’s fundraiser will feature a cocktail hour, dinner, live entertainment, and both silent and live auctions. The event is being sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas.

From the rolling hills of Rush County, where his mother was raised on a farm among five siblings, Jeremy Myrick traces his roots back to the heart of agriculture in rural Kansas. His story, starting as a toddler living with his grandmother while his family’s home was being repaired, shows the essence of hard work and the love of a family that nurtured his passion for farming.

Most of Jeremy's childhood was spent on the family farm, where he dedicated countless hours to riding various pieces of equipment and engaging in tasks such as elevating terraces and building waterways. Surrounded by animals and learning the ins and outs of machinery, he developed a deep connection to the land. 

His grandfather, a dedicated welder, instilled a strong work ethic in the family, with high expectations set for Jeremy and his siblings. Through his cherished relationships with his uncles and grandmother, he came to view farming not just as a vocation, but as the way of life he truly desired.

“I was fortunate to spend a considerable amount of time on the farm, bonding with my uncles and learning the ropes,” Jeremy recalls. Jeremy’s early experiences solidified his desire to work the land, yet sports, particularly football, also captured his enthusiasm.

After graduating from high school in 2008, Jeremy took a significant step toward his future, earning a football scholarship at Garden City Community College (GCCC). “My parents always insisted on hard work and self-sufficiency. They assured me that I would appreciate the struggle, and they were right,” he reflects on a lesson that would define his journey.

At Garden City Community College (GCCC), Jeremy dedicated most of his time to football and “various extracurricular activities,” yet after two years, he found himself without a degree. With a heart set on returning to the family farm, he moved back in with his grandmother, a decision he described as fortunate. “She was one of the best ‘roommates’ anyone could have,” Jeremy fondly recalls, reflecting on the support and comfort she provided during that pivotal time in his life.

While he immersed himself in farm work, his family emphasized the importance of education, encouraging him to finish the remaining credits needed for his degree. Inspired by their belief in him, Jeremy committed himself to his studies and ultimately completed his associate degree at GCCC in 2013, marking a significant step on his journey toward personal and professional fulfillment.

Following the death of his grandmother in 2014, he returned to school full-time at Fort Hays State University (FHSU) to pursue an agriculture degree, culminating in his graduation in 2016.

Growing up in western Kansas, Jeremy always felt a calling toward agriculture but was uncertain about his future path—whether to stay on the family farm run by his uncle or venture into the corporate world. Realizing his deep attachment to his hometown, he sought a way to remain connected to the land. 

After starting his career as an agronomist, Jeremy discovered Diamond Ag Research (DAR), a unique opportunity right in his own backyard. “Once I joined the team, I never looked back,” he recalls. The role offered him a perfect blend of hands-on farming experience and the application of academic knowledge, all while allowing him to connect with&nbsp;people from around the globe and introduce new chemistry, traits, and practices to the agricultural sector.

Jeremy began his journey at DAR as an Ag Research Assistant II and steadily advanced to the position of efficacy project manager. 

Over time, discussions began about the possibility of him purchasing the company. Today, as the owner of DAR, Jeremy reflects on the significance of his work: “It’s the perfect blend of agriculture and research, enabling me to engage with people worldwide.” Through his leadership, he continues to foster innovation and support local agriculture, all while honoring the roots that have deeply influenced his life’s journey.

As Jeremy reflects on his career, he emphasizes the significance of collaborating with students from FHSU. “We attend the Ag Fair every year to recruit interns who share a connection to this region,” he explains. “Many of these students understand the local agricultural landscape and bring this knowledge and experience to the table.” 

Interns play a crucial role at DAR, assisting in tasks such as logging test substances, maintaining and fabricating equipment as needed for trials, and mixing test substances into spray treatments. Their responsibilities also include conducting herbicide control evaluations, plant stand counts, and a variety of other assessments required by research protocols.

Yet, beyond business, Jeremy is a pillar in his community, currently serving as the president of the Pawnee County Farm Bureau. “I’m still trying to find my footing in this role,” he admits, but remains committed to making an impact. “It’s crucial that we reach out and give back to our agricultural community.”

From organizing agricultural events at local schools to initiating mentorship opportunities for budding farmers, Jeremy emphasizes the importance of outreach. “We want to shine a light on agriculture and educate those less familiar. Engaging with the community is integral,” he notes.

Balancing work and family, Jeremy is a devoted husband and father of four. He married in the fall of 2017, and his personal life took on new dimensions when he became a father. “I call it miniature farming,” he jokes about involving his children in his work, teaching them the values he learned as a child. “They’re learning the ropes, and I hope one day they’ll take over and be even more successful.”

Looking ahead, Jeremy acknowledges the challenges of the agricultural sector, especially in uncertain times. “My goal is to keep Diamond Ag afloat because I simply cannot fathom failure,” he states resolutely. He aims to expand the company while cherishing time with his growing family, understanding the significance of both pursuits.

“I’ve appreciated the work ethic my parents instilled in me. You must want it and work for it,” Jeremy reflects, embodying the spirit of resilience. As he considers his journey thus far, Jeremy expresses a heartfelt perspective: “If you do what you love, you won’t work a day in your life. It sounds good, but it’s not real. However, because you love it, you’re willing to work harder than ever.”

To aspiring entrepreneurs and students considering a career in agriculture, Jeremy conveys an essential message: “I’m very proud of my unconventional route. If I could change anything, I wouldn’t. We all mature at different rates, and our unique paths shape who we are today. I was scared to return to school at 24, but I found my purpose once locked in. Hard times make tough people. If you want it, go get it. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day. Keep your head up, grind away, and don’t lose sight of your goals. There will be bumps in the road, but with commitment, today’s mountains can become mere mounds in your rearview mirror.”

With aspirations for continual growth and community impact, Jeremy Myrick is not just cultivating crops; he is nurturing a legacy that honors his roots while paving the way for future generations in Pawnee County and beyond. His journey is a powerful reminder that dedication, resilience, and passion can create a fulfilling life, both personally and professionally, even amidst the challenges of the agricultural landscape.

Feeding Hays volunteers needed for tonight's meal

HOLYROOD — The Heritage Matinee event will kick off at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4 at the Holyrood American Legion with archival film footage collected by Arlen Schultz dating from the 1940s depicting scenes such as a football game between Lorraine and Holyrood, and the dedication of the Ellsworth County Courthouse and celebratory parade.

An open mic storytelling time will follow for people to share their recollections about Holyrood and Ellsworth County. Attendees are encouraged to consider sharing a prepared historical anecdote between 1-2 minutes, which will be recorded for Holyrood’s archives. 'Sod and Stubble' Director Ken Spurgeon will introduce his film and entertain audience questions.&nbsp;&nbsp;

'Sod and Stubble' tells the story of the Ise family who homesteaded in Osborne County, Kansas in the 1870s and battled through the many challenges of homesteading on the Kansas plains. The original story was written by John Ise in the 1930s with the help and remembrances of his mother Rosa Ise. In the 1990s, Von Rothenberger added over 150pages of additional text to the new release. Now, the story of Henry and Rosie Ise comes to life on the screen through the work of an award-winning cast and crew.&nbsp;&nbsp;

'Sod and Stubble' was filmed in Downs, Wichita, and El Dorado, Kansas.&nbsp;

The film was produced by New Albany Films and Sod and Stubble LLC, and distributed by Purdie Distribution. St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 2900 Canal Blvd., Hays, will hold its annual pet blessing following the 11 a.m. worship service on Sunday, Oct. 12.

Pastor Ben Houchen said, “Bring your beloved pets to receive a blessing and share in this joyful celebration of God’s creation.”

In addition, the church will hold a “Pet Supply Drive” that day, with donations going to the Humane Society of the High Plains.

LOGAN — The Hansen Museum Continuing Education Program is delighted to welcome certified Bob Ross instructor Hope Blakely of Arvada, Colorado, for two Magic of Painting classes on October 18 and 19. 

On Saturday, October 18, participants will paint Tropical Paradise, and on Sunday, October 19, English Village. 

Both classes will take place in the Hansen Museum Community Room, located at 110 W. Main Street in Logan, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day, with a one-hour lunch break.

These classes offer a fun, beginner-friendly introduction to painting. Students will be guided step-by-step through the process of completing a finished painting each day. No prior experience is necessary, and all supplies are provided. Participants need only bring a roll of paper towels. 

Open to individuals aged 13 and older, these sessions provide a relaxed, supportive atmosphere that fosters creativity and camaraderie.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Majority Leader&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/john-thune">John Thune</a>&nbsp;is rejecting Democratic demands on health care as unserious but says&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-omb-government-shutdown-mass-firings-41e2bb0ebd2d2cc13b2894721d6b6641">a government shutdown</a>&nbsp;is still “avoidable” despite sharp divisions ahead of Wednesday's funding deadline.

“I’m a big believer that there’s always a way out,” the South Dakota Republican said in an interview with The Associated Press on Thursday. “And I think there are off-ramps here, but I don’t think that the negotiating position, at least at the moment, that the Democrats are trying to exert here is going to get you there.”

Thune said Democrats are going to have to “dial back”&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/congress-government-shutdown-trump-schumer-health-care-55d72ec2cdfd6b0c9f6dcc61696dbbc6">their demands</a>, which include immediately extending health insurance subsidies and reversing the health care policies in the massive tax bill that Republicans passed over the summer. Absent that, Thune said, “we’re probably plunging forward toward the shutdown.”

It's just the latest standoff in Washington over government funding, stretching back through several administrations. President Donald Trump was the driving force behind&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/30769167ab7a4ef9adf880d020b775dd">the longest shutdown ever</a>&nbsp;during his first term, as he sought money for a U.S.-Mexico border wall. This time it is Democrats who are making demands as they face intense pressure from their core supporters to stand up to the Republican president and his policies.

Democrats have shown little signs of relenting, just before spending runs out Wednesday. Their position remained the same even after the White House Office of Management and Budget on Wednesday&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-congress-government-shutdown-99d4cafe53209f6dc6ae5562c2ac79d2">released a memo</a>&nbsp;that said agencies should consider a “reduction in force” for many federal programs if the government closes — meaning thousands of federal workers could be permanently laid off.

Senate Democratic Leader&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/charles-schumer">Chuck Schumer</a>&nbsp;of New York said the OMB memo was simply an “attempt at intimidation” and predicted the “unnecessary firings will either be overturned in court or the administration will end up hiring the workers back.”

Thune stopped short of criticizing the White House threat of mass layoffs, saying the situation remains “a hypothetical.” Still, he said no one should be surprised by the memo as “everyone knows Russ Vought,” the head of the Office of Management and Budget, and his&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-doge-russell-vought-project-2025-f403174299933b7e3a3b6ebd779c146c">longtime advocacy</a>&nbsp;for slashing government.

“But it’s all avoidable,” Thune said. “And so if they don’t want to go down that path, there’s a way to avoid going down that path.”

One way to avoid a shutdown, Thune said, would be for enough Democrats to vote with Republicans for a stripped-down “clean” bill to keep the government open for the next seven weeks while negotiations on spending continue. That’s how Republicans avoided a shutdown in March, when Schumer and several other Democrats decided at the last minute to vote with Republicans — to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/democrats-congress-chuck-schumer-government-funding-shutdown-43d1acea20c34ad28d848edc08ad6375">great political cost</a>&nbsp;when Schumer's party then revolted.

A seven-week funding bill has already passed the House.

“What would eight Democrats be willing to support?” Thune asked. “In terms of a path forward, or at least understanding what that path forward looks like.”

Republicans in the 100-member Senate need at least seven Democrats to vote with them to get the 60 votes necessary for a short-term funding package, and they may lose up to two of their own — Republican Sens. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Rand Paul of Kentucky both opposed it in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/house-trump-funding-bill-republicans-shutdown-1fea0f79c85ec69b91d9789fbda00834">preliminary votes</a>&nbsp;last week. A competing bill from Democrats also fell well short of 60 votes.

Thune suggested some individual bipartisan bills to fund parts of the government for the next year could be part of a compromise, “but that requires cooperation from both sides,” he said.

Democrats say they are frustrated that Thune hasn’t approached them to negotiate — and that Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-government-shutdown-schumer-jeffries-meeting-8b1726435066403bf6b9fe4e4fffc029">abruptly canceled a meeting</a>&nbsp;with Schumer and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York that had been scheduled for this week. Trump wrote on social media, “I have decided that no meeting with their Congressional Leaders could possibly be productive.”

Thune said he “did have a conversation with the president” and offered his opinion on the meeting, which he declined to disclose. “But I think the president speaks for himself, and I think he came to the conclusion that that meeting would not be productive,” Thune said.

Still, he says he thinks Trump could be open to a negotiation on the expanded health care subsidies that expire at the end of the year if Democrats weren't threatening a shutdown. Many people who receive the subsidies through the marketplaces set up by the Affordable Care Act are expected to see&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/congress-health-care-tax-credits-obamacare-shutdown-f1ee636ddba7f65baa5234c55cb0c96e">a sharp rise in premiums</a>&nbsp;if Congress doesn’t extend them.

Some Republicans have agreed with Democrats that keeping the subsidies is necessary, but Thune says “reform is going to have to be a big part of it.” Democrats are likely to oppose such changes.

By Monday, when the Senate returns to session, lawmakers will have just over 24 hours to avoid federal closures.

Thune said he intends to bring up the bills that were rejected last week. “They’ll get multiple chances to vote,” he said, before a government shutdown begins at midnight Wednesday.

He said he hopes “cooler heads will prevail.”

Latest standoff in Washington over government funding continues

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A driver involved in a&nbsp;&nbsp;fatal crash that killed a Kansas Sheriff's Deputy is expected to learn his fate Friday.

The sentencing for Kelvin Burgett, 28, Prescott Valley, Arizona scheduled for Judge William Wooley's courtroom was delayed last week. He is due back in court Friday afternoon,&nbsp;according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office. 

In July Burgett pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter, according to the district attorneys office.

He was originally charged with involuntary manslaughter while under the influence of alcohol or drugs and&nbsp; driving while suspended, according to the Sedgwick County arrest report.

In October of 2022, a&nbsp;2016 Dodge Charger driven by Sedgwick County Sheriff's Deputy Sidnee Carter, 22, Bel Aire, was southbound on 135th Street at 29th Street north one mile west of Northwest Wichita and Maize responding to a disturbance, according to Sheriff Jeff Easter.

A westbound 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Burgett failed to stop at a stop sign and struck the drivers side of the Dodge Charger, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Deputy Carter was pronounced deceased at the scene. EMS transported Burgett to a local hospital.

Deputy Carter had only worked in the field alone for a week, according to Sheriff Easter. She began field training in the summer of 2022 and completed that training Oct. 1.&nbsp;

Deputy Carter had served the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office for one and a half years in the Sedgwick County Detention Facility before transferring to the Law Enforcement Bureau in February 2022. She graduated the Law Enforcement Academy on July 21, 2022.&nbsp;

Driver in crash that killed Kan. deputy. expected to learn his fate

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating alleged criminal damage in Manhattan.

Just before 6:30p.m. Thursday, officers filed a report of criminal damage to property in the 200 block of 5th Street, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 42-year-old woman reported an unknown suspect damaged her daughter’s cello on a school bus. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $2,000.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Multiple law enforcement agencies are responding to a threat at Hutchinson Regional Airport on Friday morning.

Officials said the airspace around the airport has been closed until noon while the situation is investigated. No further details have been released, and authorities said additional information will be provided when available.

KANSAS CITY — U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins announced Thursday plans to boost American farmers by purchasing millions of bushels of crops.

In an effort to increase American exports, the USDA will purchase 417,000 metric tons of commodities immediately to support the international food aid programs. That’s equivalent to more than 16 million bushels of corn and sorghum.

Rollins made the announcement during a speech that earned a standing ovation at the Ag Outlook Forum in Kansas City, where she outlined the Trump Administration’s efforts to aid a struggling farm economy.
