The new Ellis County 100 Who Care group is gearing up for its next quarterly meeting and is looking for members to grow its group.

The group met in July and awarded the Cancer Council of Ellis County $2,500.

100 Who Care is a giving circle that asks 100 residents to donate $100 each. The members of the group gather to hear from three local nonprofits and then vote on their preferred cause.

The cause that earns the most votes receives a collective $10,000 donation from the group.

The group has started small with about 30 members, but is looking to grow,&nbsp;Brandy Ridgway, local organizer, said.

Ridgway said the award to the Cancer Council was particularly poignant for her because the meeting fell on her mother's birthday, and she died of cancer.

"I know what good they do," she said of the Cancer Council. "Financially, it was difficult when my mom had cancer, and I was having to go take her to her appointments. I put 10,000 miles on my car in a three-month time frame."

Members of the group then nominate three nonprofits to present at the next quarterly meeting. The three groups that have been nominated to present for the next round of funding are <a href="https://www.firstcallelliscounty.com/">First Call for Help</a>, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/EllisCoBigs">Big Brothers Big Sisters</a> and <a href="https://www.janascampaign.org/">Jana's Campaign</a>.

The meeting will be at 6 p.m. Oct. 14 at the Sternberg Museum. Refreshments will be served.

However, Ridgway said if you are willing to donate, you can show up on the night of the meeting.

Payments are made directly to the selected nonprofit.

Nonprofits that don't win a donation round can be nominated to present again for future donation rounds. To qualify for donations, organizations must be 501(c)(3)s or affiliated with a nonprofit and serve Ellis County.

There are no qualifications to be a member of the group, except that you have to agree to give $100 to the organization that the group votes to support that quarter.

The group is also looking for Ellis County nonprofits that would like to present to 100 Who Care for funding. Ridgway said since the funds are a one-time donation, the group prefers the nonprofits request funds for a specific project or purchase instead of operating funds.

The group members have determined they will not fund political groups or churches. However, nonprofit programs sponsored by churches can apply for funding,&nbsp;Ridgway said.

Ridgway said some local nonprofits have been confused. 100 Who Care is seeking to award money to nonprofits, not the other way around.

"We are really not a nonprofit ourselves. We are a group of friends," Ridgway said. "When I wrote my check, I wrote it directly to the Cancer Council. I know it went specifically for that."

100 Who Care has about 350 chapters nationwide. The groups are 100% volunteer-run. Donations are tax-deductible.

A 100 Who Care Alliance has formed to support chapters around the world. Ridgway will attend the alliance's conference in September to learn about growing the local chapter.

The group's goals also include working with a Fort Hays State University Leadership 310 class this semester and building a website.

As a third-year medical student, London Keller cared for patients at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital for only a few weeks but came away with new insights and experiences.

Keller, a Hays native, is a student at the Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Wichita.

While at the hospital, he worked alongside Dr. Arlo Reimer, MD, and other staff members at the Family Medicine Clinic.

“My biggest impression of [the hospital] is how kind and inviting the staff is,” Keller said. “Honestly, I think I was welcomed by every staff member in the hospital. In addition, I was impressed by the vast number of services offered to patients in Larned and the surrounding communities.

“Overall, [the hospital] embodies the idea of rural health care, while maintaining a high standard of care for each and every patient.”

In his family-medicine rotation, Keller met with patients, became acquainted with their histories, performed focused physical exams and reported information to a provider.

“We then talked about a treatment plan and discussed this with the patient,” Keller noted. “This experience at [the hospital] allowed me to truly have the rural family-medicine experience. I was able to see the importance of knowing your patients on a more personal level than just what is on their chart.

“In turn, this allows for a more complete care plan for each patient, which improves patient satisfaction and outcomes.”

Keller is grateful to the hospital staff because “they taught me so much from their years of clinical experience. They made it easy to learn, challenged my clinical decision-making and improved my comfort level with patients.”

He also noted he lived in a hospital room during his stay in Larned. “This was a good learning experience that will help me better relate to my future patients.”

While he is currently unsure about his plans, Keller’s goal is to practice medicine in rural Kansas after his residency.

After graduating from Hays High School in 2018, Keller earned a degree in human biology from The University of Kansas in 2023. He then began medical school at the Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine and will graduate in 2027.

Dr. Dasa Gangadhar, MD, senior associate dean at Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine, said, “London has been deeply moved by the strong personal relationships Dr. Reimer shares with his patients. The warm welcome from the hospital staff and the broader community has made a lasting impression.

“For London, this rotation has been a superb introduction to clinical medicine and the meaningful role physicians play in rural communities. It is exactly this type of student, in exactly this type of clinical setting, who will be inspired to return and practice in rural America, fulfilling the mission of our school.”

The Kansas Geological Society announced the donation and public release of what it calls a significant legacy in earth science: geological-mapping data from Kansas dating back a hundred years. Along with the Kansas Geological Foundation, they're offering access to mountains of carefully catalog­ed paper seismograms dating to 1923. If you're interested, reach out at KGSlibrary dot com.

US Crude prices through July of this year average just under $68 a barrel. The average so far in August is just over $64.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The benchmark futures contract on the NYMEX gained a few cents Friday to settle at $63.66 per barrel. Light sweet crude has held under $64 for eleven consecutive trading sessions. But prices spiked on Monday, with NYMEX crude rising two percent to close in on $65 a barrel. London Brent was also higher, rising toward $69 a barrel by Monday midday.

Kansas oil prices are up a dollar from a week ago, but down $3.50 from the first of the month. Kansas Common crude at CHS in McPherson is fetching $54 a barrel.

The weekly Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes has only been this low twice in the last five years. The tally is down one oil rig to a total of 538. The report from Texas is down two rigs. North Dakota is down one.

The Kansas Rig Count from Independent Oil and Gas Service drops to 15, with six active rigs east of Wichita, down two, and nine in Western Kansas, which is down three.

Operators completed 33 wells in Kansas last week, with 19 in Western Kansas. Independent Oil and Gas Service reports 792 new well-completions so far this year, compared to 862 a year ago. Operators completed producing wells in Barton and Stafford Counties. In Ellis County, operators completed four wells including one dry hole. Operators in Finney, Gove and Pratt counties also reported dry holes this week.

Kansas regulators okayed 11 new drilling locations, with seven in Western Kansas including one new permit in Stafford County. With 458 so far this year, new permits trail last year by more than 28%.

The Energy Information Administration reports commercial crude stockpiles dropped six million barrels to 420.7 million as of August 15. That's about six percent below the five-year seasonal average.

At 13,382,000 barrels per day, US crude production is up slightly from a week ago but down slightly from the same week a year ago. EIA says output so far this year is up two percent from last year at this time. The four-week average is down slightly.

The Strategic Petroleum Reserves added 200,000, now topping off at 403.4 million barrels. Strategic stockpiles are up seven percent or 26 million barrels from a year ago.

US crude exports topped four million barrels a day for the first time since June and only the 12th weekly tally this year.&nbsp; The Energy Information Administration says crude exports are up 22 percent from last week, up eight percent from a year ago and up nearly three percent from two years ago.

EIA reports imports at just under 6.5 million barrels a day, down nearly half a million barrels a day from a week ago, down two percent from a year ago, and down six percent from two years ago

The US is a net crude importer, importing more than we export by more than two million barrels a day. But refined-product exports dwarf imports by more than five million barrels a day.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent accused India of profiteering from purchases of Russian crude oil during the war in Ukraine. Bessent says Russian oil now accounts for 42% of India's total oil purchases, up from under 1% before the war.&nbsp; Bessent told CNBC that India is “making billions” reselling Russian crude.

The Times of India reported that some refiners in India were postponing new orders for Russian crude, awaiting clarity on the potential impact of additional tariffs. The Trump administration has threatened an additional 25% tariff at the end of the month because of India's Russian oil purchases.

China is the largest importer of Russian oil. They typically take shipment from ports in Russia's Far East, but Bloomberg reports a near-doubling of deals at ports in the Baltic Sea and Black Sea.

TOPEKA –The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has rescinded a boil water advisory for the Countryside Estates Mobile Home Park, Hays, public water supply system located in Ellis County. 

The advisory was issued because of a loss of pressure due to water main breaks. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.&nbsp;

Laboratory testing of drinking water samples collected from the Countryside Estates Mobile Home Park indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved. &nbsp;

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind notice following testing at a certified laboratory.

Boil Water Advisory rescinded for Hays' Countryside Estates mobile home park

After 25 impactful years, HaysMed is retiring its traditional drive-thru flu shot clinic and launching a more flexible, integrated approach to community health. Starting this fall, flu shots will be offered during its monthly blood screening events- providing a convenient, one-stop opportunity for preventive care.

 The decision to discontinue the drive-thru format comes in response to changing community needs and increased access to free flu shots at local pharmacies such as Walgreens, Walmart, and Dillon’s. While the HaysMed drive-thru clinic once served nearly 4,000 individuals annually, recent participation has dropped below 1,500. This new format allows the hospital to better align with current trends and improve accessibility for the community.

Participants can now receive a free flu shot, participate in blood screening lab draws, or do both- all in one visit. Flu shots will be available on the following Saturdays from 6:30 a.m. – 10:00a.m. at Entrance B (Miller Pavillion), using parking Lot B on September 6, October 4, or November 1, 2025.

Children’s flu shots will be administered in the same area as adult vaccinations to simplify the experience for families. To help with flow and minimize wait times, participants may choose to go directly to the flu shot station or begin with blood screening.

Since its inception, HaysMed has proudly administered 69,802 flu shots to the community. In 2024 alone, the hospital provided 1,300 adult and 378 pediatric vaccines free of charge, thanks to the support of the HaysMed Foundation.

The HaysMed flu shot events have also supported local families through food donations. In 2024, participants donated 583 pounds of canned food to the Community Assistance Center. Since 2007, the hospital collected a total of 26,854 pounds- nearly 13.5 tons of food! 

All attendees are encourage to bring a non-perishable food item to continue this tradition of giving back.

Hays High Sept. 4 soccer game cancelled

CRAWFORD COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on&nbsp;

Just before 6p.m. August 23, police were dispatched to Americas Best Value Inn, 3108 N Broadway Street, in Pittsburg, in reference to a report of a sexual assault that just occurred, according to a media release.

Upon arrival, officers met with the reporting party about the incident, which involved a juvenile victim and an adult male. While the officers were on scene, they were made aware that the suspect, identified as 50-year-old Damien Dorien Yarbrough of Pittsburg, was attempting to leave the hotel. 

Police found Yarbrough with his luggage attempting to leave, and officers detained him. Detectives with the police department’s Criminal Investigations Division were contacted and responded to assist with the investigation.

The victim and their family were interviewed about the incident, and the victim was referred to local medical providers for further attention. 

A search warrant application was prepared for Yarbrough’s hotel room to look for evidence relating to the incident. The search warrant was granted, and items of suspected evidence were collected.

Yarbrough was arrested and transported to jail at the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office for booking. He is in being held on a&nbsp;a $500,000 bond on requested charges of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated criminal sodomy, and rape.

Kansas man accused of kidnapping, child rape at hotel

WICHITA– Earlier this month, the&nbsp;Democratic Caucus of the Kansas House of Representatives and Senate&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.marshall.senate.gov/wp-content/uploads/Immediate-Demand-to-Cease-Illegal-Raids-and-Detentions-in-Kansas-.docx4_.pdf">sent a letter</a>&nbsp;to U.S. Senators Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall accusing the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) of being “bloated and reckless” and exhibiting “unprofessional behavior” while apprehending dangerous, illegal immigrants from Kansas communities. &nbsp;

Unlike Kansas Democrats, Senator Marshall’s office reached out to DHS officials to confirm details of the targeted enforcement events cited in the letter.&nbsp; Marshall's response is below

“Our federal law enforcement officials have safely and legally removed dozens of illegal immigrants from our communities,”&nbsp;said Senator Marshall.&nbsp;“President Trump promised to make America safe again, and he is delivering on that promise. For Democrats to make unfounded and false accusations against our hardworking law enforcement officials is not only unprofessional but also against the American people's goal of closing our borders and keeping communities safe from illegal and dangerous criminals.”

Contrary to the allegations leveled by the Kansas Democratic Caucus, agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) conducted the targeted enforcement operations legally and judiciously.&nbsp;

During the July 30, 2025, targeted enforcement operations in Johnson and Wyandotte Counties:

“Our agents were executing a&nbsp;lawful and targeted operation. When agitators spread false narratives or interfere with law enforcement, it undermines public safety and puts both the community and law enforcement personnel at risk,”&nbsp;said HSI Kansas City Special Agent in Charge Mark Zito.&nbsp;“Make no mistake: individuals who violate federal immigration law by being unlawfully present in the United States may be subject to detention and removal proceedings under the law. And let me be clear, assaults on officers have surged dramatically, and anyone who dares to obstruct, assault, or interfere with federal agents will face immediate consequences, including arrest and prosecution to the fullest extent of the law.”

Kan. U.S. Senator responds to accusation levied against DHS by Democrats

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Two more suspects accused in connection with the death of a 1-year-old Kansas boy were to go to trial Monday. Both trials were continued until 2026, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Roames Bonner, who was 17 at the time of the crime, was set to face a bench trial Monday afternoon in Judge Jeffery Goering's courtroom. The Judge earlier this year  ruled Bonner can be tried as an adult, according to the District Attorney's office.

Jonathan Tillery-Matthais, 21, was to face a jury trial on Monday morning in Judge Jeffery Goering's courtroom, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Bonner, 21-year-old Jonathan Tillery-Matthias and&nbsp;26-year-old K’Veion Richard all of Wichita, were charged with 1st&nbsp;degree murder and criminal discharge of a firearm for the death of 1-year-old Taidyn Anderson, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Just after 7p.m. February 19, police responded to a shooting in the 2500 block of South Oliver, according to Police Lt. Aaron Moses. Through the investigation, officers learned that two adult females were struck by gunfire and 1-year-old Taidyn Anderson was also struck by gunfire and died of his injuries.

Police identified three suspects in the case and the following day arrested&nbsp; Bonner, Richard and&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/InmateSearch/Details.aspx?Id=746317">Tillery-Matthias&nbsp;</a>.

At the time of the crime,&nbsp;<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/InmateSearch/Details.aspx?Id=746317">Tillery-Matthias</a>&nbsp;was on pre-trial supervision for Criminal Discharge of a Firearm into an Occupied Vehicle stemming from a Wichita Police investigation.<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/InmateSearch/Details.aspx?Id=232072">&nbsp;Richard&nbsp;</a>was on Parole for Criminal Discharge of a Firearm, Aggravated Burglary, Aggravated Assault x2, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon.

Police believe that this was a targeted event which led to the death of the boy. In April, Richard was sentenced to life in prison for the boy's death.

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement investigating a shooting&nbsp; in Wichita are asking the public for help to locate&nbsp;16-year-old Cesar Govea, according to a statement from Wichita Police.

Govea is wanted in connection with a shooting that injured his 16-year-old ex-girlfriend and a 17-year-old boy. The victims were inside a vehicle near Wichita and Waterwalk when Govea opened fire. 



Govea is considered armed and dangerous. Do not approach him.

Still at large: Kan. teen wanted for shooting ex-girlfriend

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump fired&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-federal-reserve-rates-354ddf9b0b2a78eabbe7ebd361bf2e05">Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook</a>&nbsp;late Monday, a sharp escalation in his battle to exert greater control over what has long been considered an institution&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/fed-federal-reserve-powell-trump-63c3e35e8606b7b73455b08aa21456dd">independent from day-to-day politics</a>.

Trump said in a letter posted on his Truth Social platform that he is firing Cook because of allegations that she committed mortgage fraud. Bill Pulte, a Trump appointee to the agency that regulates mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, made the accusations last week.

Pulte alleged that Cook had claimed two primary residences -- in Ann Arbor, Michigan and Atlanta -- in 2021 to get better mortgage terms. Mortgage rates are often higher on second homes or those purchased to rent.

The announcement came days after Cook said she wouldn’t leave her post despite Trump previously calling for her to resign. The Fed’s board has seven members, meaning Trump’s move could have deep economic and political ramifications.

Trump said in announcing the move that he had the constitutional authority to remove Cook, but doing so will raise questions about control of the Fed as an independent entity.

The firing is likely to touch off a legal battle and Cook could be allowed to remain in her seat while the case plays out. Cook would have to fight the legal battle herself, as the injured party, rather than the Fed.

It is the latest effort by the administration to take control over one of the few remaining independent agencies in Washington. Trump has&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-powell-federal-reserve-building-renovation-2393d9ac9fdb9508f285d0faa5f4de41">repeatedly attacked</a>&nbsp;the Fed’s chair, Jerome Powell, for not cutting its short-term interest rate, and even threatened to fire him.

Forcing Cook off the Fed’s governing board would provide Trump an opportunity to appoint a loyalist. Trump has said he would only appoint officials who would support cutting rates.

SEDGWICK COUNTY — A Kansas man who admitted to a deadly knife attack learned his fate last Friday.

Judge William Woolley sentence William Ball, 24 of Wichita, to&nbsp;55 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections with 15 percent Good Time Credit and 36 months post-release surpervision, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.&nbsp;

In June Ball pleaded guilty to charges of 2nd degree murder.

On March 10, Sedgwick County Emergency Communications received a report of a stabbing in the 4100 block of East Whitney Lane, according to Wichita Police Lt. Aaron Moses. The caller reported someone had been stabbed in the street.

Officers from the Wichita Police Department responded to the scene and located 51- year-old Brian Edwards from Wichita suffering from stab wound to the torso.&nbsp; EMS transported Edwards to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Officers at the scene quickly identified a suspect in this case and took William Ball into custody without incident. There were multiple individuals at the scene who were later interviewed by Wichita Police Department Homicide investigators.

&nbsp;Police booked Ball into the Sedgwick County Jail. This was the third criminal homicide in Wichita in 2025.

Prison for deadly Kansas knife attack

MANHATTAN —Kansas State University is the latest target in a series of swatting incidents nationwide.

Late Monday afternoon Kansas State University was a target of a swatting attack intended to be disruptive to our Manhattan campus, according to a&nbsp; social media report from the university.

Riley County Dispatch received a call on their administrative line of a message stating active violence at Hale Library.

Officers immediately responded and determined the call was a hoax and there was no threat or danger. The building is safe, and the Manhattan campus is under normal operations.

This appears to be similar to other swatting reports happening at universities across the country.

K-State a target of swatting incident

GEARY COUNTY— Law enforcement across the state continue to ticket drivers for traveling far above the posted speed limit.

According to a social media report from Junction City Police, an officer recently issued a ticket to a driver on Grant Avenue who was caught traveling 93 mph in a 35 mph zone - that’s nearly three times the posted limit, resulting in a  $650 ticket.

According to the National Safety Council, speeding was a factor in 29% of all traffic fatalities in 2023, resulting in 11,775 lives lost - that’s over 32 deaths every single day.
