GOVE COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 5p.m. Thursday in Gove County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2006 Toyota Tacoma driven by&nbsp; Steven Alwyn&nbsp;Williams, 21, Olathe, was northbound in the 1600 block of County Road 58 thirteen miles south of Interstate 70.

The pickup left the roadway to the right. The driver overcorrected to the left, overcorrected again to the right and the vehicle entered the east ditch. The pickup traveled 100 feet into the ditch and the driver attempted to correct back to the road.&nbsp; The pickup rolled and came to rest in the west ditch. The driver was ejected and was found in the east ditch.

EMS transported Williams to Wesley Medical Center. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Two men who were arrested on charges that they allegedly stole money from the Ellis Casey's will face additional charges for felony theft from the Hays Walmart.

Dresean Holden, 20, of Flint, Michigan, and Hakeem Black, 22, of Flint, Michigan, were arrested outside Limon, Colorado, after they were identified as possible suspects in a theft of $1,500 in cash from the Ellis Casey's on Sept. 6.

Lt. Brandon Wright of the Hays Police Department said the suspects allegedly entered the Hays Walmart. One of the suspects allegedly attempted to purchase an iPad using a fraudulent card.

Wright said the clerk thought the card was legitimate, but no charge was made when the card was run.

The second suspect allegedly used a card to make a similar fraudulent transaction for three more iPads. The suspects allegedly left the store with four iPads for which they did not pay, Wright said.

The reported loss was $3,941, which included insurance plans for the iPads.

Evidence was recovered from the suspects upon their arrest that allegedly linked them to several other thefts along the I-70 corridor in Kansas, according to the Ellis Police Department.

Information on the suspects' identities has been provided to the relevant agencies to assist in their investigations.

Suspects in Ellis Casey's theft face addition charges in Hays

A Hays man has been arrested on charges of felony theft and identity theft after allegedly signing up for internet services in the name of a disabled adult for whom he cared.

Curtis Joe Koerner, 39, of Hays, served as a caregiver for a disabled adult for two years.

He allegedly used that person's name to sign up for internet services in 2018 and was continuing to use those services.

Another caregiver was reviewing the victim's bills and found a second account under a different address, according to Lt. Brandon Wright of the Hays Police Department.

Officers were able to locate Koerner at the address associated with the account.

Koerner was arrested on Aug. 26 on requested charges of identity theft and felony theft.

The billing on the account from June 2018 to present amounted to more than $6,200, according to Wright.

Wright said this is a good example of why people should review their bills regularly.

The Hays USD 489 school board decided to create a committee to help shape policy on naming rights for school district facilities.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/a90fb672-f7e5-4826-b5f3-1decd214e83c">The district effectively let an offer from Golden Belt Bank of $200,000 for the naming rights to the new football field at Hays High School expire. That contract would have been for a 10-year term.</a>

The bank set a deadline of Sept. 15 to accept the offer.

Board member Ruth Ruder thanked Golden Belt Bank for what she called a tremendous offer.&nbsp;

"We just recently talked about taxes, and here you're given an opportunity to take $200,000 that is given from Golden Belt Bank," she said.

She said although naming of facilities is usually seen at colleges, Hays could be at the forefront of something new.

She said the Golden Belt Bank offer did not include the bank's logo on the turf or changing the name of the school's mascot to the "Golden Belt Indians."

"When you are talking about increasing revenue, this is the way to do it," she said. "I'm not just talking about the football field. I'm talking about the auditorium, the basketball courts, the tennis courts."

Ruder said she could not think of a downside to Golden Belt Bank's offer.

"It's funds in our pocket. It's free funds. To me, that's positivity for the community and positivity on for Hays High School," she said.

Board member Jayme Goetz said she has talked to community members, teachers and coaches about the facility naming issue. She said those people had reservations, but indicated they would approve of naming rights if the price was right.

Goetz said she thought money raised from naming fields should be designated for turf replacement, and the price for those naming rights should be proportional to the cost of that replacement.

She estimated the cost of replacing the turf at $600,000 to $800,000 every eight to 10 years. She proposed naming rights should cost $35,000 to $40,000 per year.

Board member Meagan Zampeiri-Lillpopp said she believed a policy on naming rights was necessary.

"I am interested in the conversation," she said.

Board member Allen Park said, "If it's worth doing, it should be done right."

"This is policy, and that's our job. I think it should be fair. I think we should give the opportunity to everybody somehow," he said.

Board President Curt Vajnar said he did not think the board had a deadline for making decisions on naming rights. The bank has a deadline, he said.

"The naming of USD 489 facilities belongs to the citizens of Hays, not a business or entity. ... At the end of that end zone, it says Hays. It does not say Hays High School. It belongs to all of us."

Vajnar said he did not think the bank was offering enough for the naming rights for a 10-year contract. He also said he thought all businesses and entities should have the same opportunity to have naming rights, as Park discussed.

He echoed Goetz's comments, saying any money coming from the naming rights of the fields should be designated for field maintenance.

Board Vice President Ken Brooks said he did not think Golden Belt Bank had any ill intentions when making the donation offer.

"They were trying to help our community and help our school district," he said.&nbsp;

Brooks said everything the rest of the board was asking for in the contract was included, except for the donation paying for the full replacement of the turf.

He said the community members he has spoken to have been in favor of accepting the bank's donation.

"I get you may feel this is not enough, but this is a generous offer," Brooks said.

He said the football season was starting, and Golden Belt Bank was the only entity that came forward with such a donation offer.

"I get that we want to have a policy going forward, but I don't think that this is a bad plan," Brooks said. "When I look at what they proposed, I don't see any red flags in there."

Vajnar said he had spoken to officials at the bank, and he believed there was no ill will between the district and the bank.

&nbsp;"If it's worth that to them now, it will be worth it to them three or four months from now," Vajnar said, "Just because they were first doesn't mean it's theirs."

Hays USD 489 postpones naming rights decision, despite bank's deadline

&nbsp;Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau

The Hays Police Department will partner with the Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau to present “Pedal Patrol in the Park,” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 13, in Aubel Bickle Optimist Park at 30th&nbsp;and Sherman Ave.

The goal of the event is to promote bike and scooter safety among young riders, with emphasis on learning correct helmet use and rules of the road for bicycles and scooters.

Events will include rides around the park with the HPD Bike Patrol and Hays Area Bicyclists, along with parent/toddler rides and bicycle seat safety checks for those who ride with a grown-up.&nbsp;

Children aged 0-13 will be encouraged to bring their scooters, bikes, trikes, Little Tikes cars, skateboards – whatever wheels they ride – to the event. Parents are also encouraged to bring their bikes.&nbsp;

A limited number of bicycle helmets will be given away, thanks to a grant from the Ellis County Legacy Fund and the Heartland Healthy Living Fund of the Heartland Community Foundation.

“This will help us further our goal of improving public safety,” said Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler. “A helmet will help a child form a lifelong healthy habit of being safe every time they ride.”

Attendees can enjoy food trucks, music, games, and bike safety activities. Pfonz’s Smokehaus, The Local, Frozen Frog, and Suck It Up Bubble Cup are scheduled to be at the event.

Story times with the HPD and the Hays Public Library Bookmobile will take place at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Other activities include safety obstacle courses, <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/76c208bb-a6aa-4e68-9115-5092bb6f74a1">safety sessions with HPD Bike Patrol officers</a>, the Fort Hays State University MakerVan, yard games, volleyball, basketball, and bicycle safety checks with Precision Valley Golf and Bike Center.

There will be various giveaways and a raffle for three bicycles and one scooter courtesy of Hays Walmart.&nbsp;Raffle tickets can be earned by participating in the safety events throughout the day.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs, picnic blankets, and coolers to the event, but no glass bottles are allowed.&nbsp;Pets on leashes are allowed but owners must clean up after their pets.

Pedal Patrol event focuses on bike, scooter safety

DOWNS — The Kansas Storytelling Festival is holding three qualifying events for the 2026 Tall Tales storytelling contest. 

Anyone (amateur) is welcome to enter these preliminary events to become one of four finalists at the Storytelling Festival on April 24-25, 2026 in Downs. All qualifier events are free to attend.

The first qualifier will be held Saturday, September 13 at the Tonganoxie Community Historical Society, 201 W. Washington St., Tonganoxie, beginning at 5:00pm. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tonganoxieartscouncil.org/copy-of-story-telling-festival">Art Events &amp; Workshops | Arts Council</a> Following the Tall Tale contest at about 7:35 p.m., Professional Storyteller Paul Strickland will perform.

The second qualifier will be held Saturday, September 20 at the Mid-America All-Indian Center, 650 N. Seneca St., Wichita, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Following the contest, previous Kansas Tall Tale champions and historical Legends will perform. A tall tale is a unique form of American Story Telling in which the narrator usually has a part in the story. Telling a tall tale uses exaggerated detail describing things larger than they really are.&nbsp; A tall tale is a story based on a fact, or facts, and filled with unbelievable elements told as if they were true and factual. A tall tale has just enough truth to make a good story and to incite the imagination. 

Professional storytellers cannot compete.

Storytelling festival's Tall Tale preliminaries begin Saturday

You’d think a gal who’s celebrated 70 summers would know bumble and honey bees are very different creatures. 

Both are bees but live entirely different lifestyles. Compare them to city and rural residents or people from Alaska and Florida. Until recently, I never considered their differences other than to note one was fuzzier and bigger.

Because we planted more flowers this year, scores more bumble bees zip through our airways, flitting from one blossom to another. Numbers increased enough we may need bee traffic control to prevent wrecks. 

That observation awakened the one time four-year-old-me full of questions needing answers. What do they eat, where do they live, are they like honey bees only bigger, and so on. Once my curiosity fired up, I scoured one article after another to learn these unique creatures are very different from honey bees that share their territory.

Honey bees are smaller with lighter coloring. Often, over a thousand live year-round in above ground hives either man-made or bee-constructed and filled with complex hexagonal wax combs designed to store honey. This labor-intensive lifestyle ensures colonies survive winters to emerge each spring. 

Workers and drones specialize in collecting pollen and nectar, organizing tidy hives and combs, and nurturing expanding populations. It can take seven or more honey bees to harvest nectar from one flower. To succeed, colonies must function as a fine-tuned organization.

Bumble bees, larger, fuzzier, and more intensely colored than honey bees operate with an entirely different mindset. Their colonies are much smaller than honey bees’. As few as 20 to possibly 400 share a hive. Drones and workers live only one season and die before winter. Only the queen survives 'til the next year so bumble bee hives exist for only one season. 

The queen doesn’t over-winter at that site. She scouts a sheltered location where she hibernates and incubates fertilized eggs 'til emerging the following spring. She then establishes a new hive in either a log or tree cavity or in an abandoned animal hole in the ground, lays eggs, and collects enough pollen to get that first hatch started.

The initial emergents are all female and once mature, care for the following hatches which turn into drones and worker bees. Bumble bees make honey, but since they don’t live through the winter, they don’t store it. They produce enough to survive from week to week, tucking it in little wax pots stashed around comb-less, disorganized hives.

Only females sting, and unlike honey bees, they don’t lose their stinger after they use it so they can wreak havoc again. 

Males have no stinger so outdoor-lovers who can identify carriers of XY chromosomes can relax when sizable, fuzzy, yellow and black dudes do a fly-by. No squealing or evasive tactics necessary.

Where it takes multiple honey bees to harvest pollen and nectar from a flower, bumble bees are more efficient. One latches onto a blossom’s anther and flaps its wings. The resulting vibration loosens pollen so the bee can harvest it, or it pollinates nearby blossoms. One researcher mentioned greenhouses utilize bumble bees to increase tomato production.

Some humans earn specialized degrees to learn everything possible about bumble bees. I prefer to watch them vibrating my flowers. 

That said, I enjoyed the time I spent unearthing facts I should have known years ago.

The Bricks is wrapping up its Brick-by-Brick Campaign. Community members and businesses have one last opportunity to leave a lasting legacy in Downtown Hays before the September 30 deadline to purchase an engraved brick or limestone block for the new Shed Project.

The Shed Project will be a new storage and service facility adjacent to the Downtown Hays Pavilion. This addition is designed to secure event equipment, serve concessions, and host the Downtown Hays Market Manager’s station during community favorites such as the Downtown Hays Market, Christmas Magic on Main Street, and Wines &amp; Steins. Once complete, the Shed will provide much-needed support for year-round events that bring vibrancy and connection to The Bricks.

While events are just part of what we do, last year they brought over 15,000 people to the heart of our community. Feast commemoration Mass Sunday at Holy Cross Church in Pfeifer

St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 2900 Canal Blvd., Hays, will have a garage sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13.

The event will be held both inside and outside the church. 

Pastor Ben Houchen said proceeds will go the church’s Feeding Hays ministry and to the church’s youth group.

Sunflower State Tour to stop in Colby and Phillipsburg this week

SHAWNEE COUNTY –&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) arrested a Topeka man Thursday morning for an alleged child sex offense.

On Thursday, Sept. 11, KBI agents with the Child Victims Unit executed a search warrant at a residence at 3709 SE Truman Ave. in Topeka, according to a media release from the KBI.

 Following the search, at around 9 a.m., KBI agents arrested Mark A. Calloway Jr., 27, of Topeka on requested charges of sexual exploitation of a child.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The KBI began investigating after a cyber-tip was submitted to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Following his arrest Calloway was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections. Additional charges against Calloway are expected.&nbsp;The Topeka Police Department assisted in the arrest.

Cyber tip led to Kan. man's arrest for alleged child sex crimes

NEW YORK (AP) — President Donald Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-yankees-baseball-first-pitch-sporting-event-trips-79ad4edabf534e1a42e637eece2446ed">attended the New York Yankees game</a>&nbsp;on Thursday night, drawing a mixed reaction while marking the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/911-attacks-anniversary-world-trade-center-0c2af6068dd5f1cc9f71a56c8a1c0c83">24th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks</a>.

Authorities installed security glass for the president outside the upper level box suite belonging to the Steinbrenner family, which owns the Yankees, on the third base side over the visiting Detroit Tigers dugout. Trump sat next to Yankees team president Randy Levine and chatted with him throughout the game.

During the national anthem, the president was shown on the stadium jumbotron and received boos from some in the crowd, cheers from others.

When Yankees slugger Aaron Judge hit a homer in the bottom of the first, Trump stood and applauded, as did members of an entourage that included Attorney General Pam Bondi and Lee Zeldin, a former New York congressman who is now head of the Environmental Protection Agency.

In the second inning, Trump's attendance was announced and he was shown on the big screen for an extended period while “Hail to the Chief" played. He smiled and pumped his fist repeatedly. Boos were heard at first, but many in the crowd cheered.

A presidential visit always prompts extra security at sporting events, but things were heightened after conservative activist and close Trump ally&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/charlie-kirk-conservative-activist-shot-546165a8151104e0938a5e085be1e8bd">Charlie Kirk was assassinated</a>&nbsp;in Utah on Wednesday. When Trump attended the Sept. 11 observance ceremony at the Pentagon earlier Thursday, authorities moved the ceremony inside as an added precaution.

Trump’s attendance recalled President George W. Bush’s ceremonial first pitch 24 years earlier as the Yankees played the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2001 World Series — a moment that came to symbolize national resilience after the attacks mere weeks earlier.

Trump stopped by the home team's clubhouse shortly before the game. He shook hands with the players and team staff members and talked about being close for years with late, longtime Yankees owner George Steinbrenner.

Trump predicted the Yankees would win, noting of his past attending games with Steinbrenner, “We won every time I came.”

“You think that was easy sitting with him for a game? It wasn’t. It was brutal. But he won, and you’re going to win," the president said. He also wished the players “a lot of luck.”

Before the president walked in, relief pitcher Fernando Cruz was the last player in a towel. His teammates urged him to quickly get dressed for Trump.

Manager Aaron Boone announced before Trump's arrival that Yankees shortstop&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/yankees-anthony-volpe-shoulder-64874a97ebea2bca4554877844e46df7">Anthony Volpe had quietly been playing</a>&nbsp;with a partial labrum tear in his left shoulder. As he greeted him, Trump patted Volpe softly on the shoulder.

Since the Sept. 11 attacks, the Yankees and their fans have marked the solemn occasion during the seventh-inning stretch by singing “God Bless America” in addition to the traditional “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” and they were doing so again Thursday. They also held a moment of silence before the first pitch.

With Trump on hand, all stadium entrances featured metal detectors and Secret Service agents, some with sniffer dogs, while New York Police Department helicopters thundered overhead.

Authorities opened the gates three hours before the first pitch, and long lines began forming even before that, though most of the crowd moved into the stadium smoothly. The Yankee Stadium scoreboard featured a large MLB logo over an American flag and a red, white and blue ribbon under the inscription “September 11, 2001, We Shall Not Forget.”

The large American flag behind the left field bleachers and the smaller flags for each of baseball’s 30 teams that ring the stadium's upper level were lowered to half-staff after Trump issued an executive order honoring Kirk. Before Wednesday’s game, the Yankees held a moment of silence for Kirk and flashed his picture on their stadium's big screen.

Trump was born in the New York borough of Queens and, though he's lived in Florida in recent years, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said he “remains a New Yorker at heart.” Still, Trump's appearances at baseball games haven't always been welcomed by fans.

OSAGE COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating two suspects on drug allegations.&nbsp;

Just before 7:30a.m. September 9,&nbsp;the Osage County Sheriff’s Office executed a narcotic search warrant in the 1200 block of Laing Street in Osage City, according to Sheriff Chris Wells.

As a result, two subjects were taken into custody and transported to the Osage County Jail Facility. Hunter A. Dorsey, 21, of Osage City is being held on requested charges of Possession of methamphetamine, Criminal use of weapons and Possession of drug paraphernalia

Angelique R. Dorsey, 45, of Osage City is in custody on requested charges of Possession of drug paraphernalia, Possession of a firearm by a felon and Warrant Arrest.

The Osage County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Osage City Police Department.

Kansas felon caught with a gun during drug bust at her home

SALINE COUNTY —Saline County deputies arrested two suspects after scamming a couple out of over $120,000.

On July 29, 2025 an elderly couple was called by a scammer claiming to be an 'agent from the US Treasurer's Office," according to Sheriff Roger Soldan.

 The scammer advised the couple that their 'personal information was used to get $3.7 million in cash from various banks.'

Furthermore, the 'agent' told the couple they were 'laundering money' and that they needed to give the 'US Government $80,000 to cover the court cases, which would be refunded after court dismissal.' Afterwards, one from the couple went to their bank and withdrew $80,000 and sent the amount in two separate shipments to two addresses in&nbsp;Downey, CA.

Moreover, on August 31st, the same 'agent' called the couple again and advised them to send an additional $40,000 in cash, but this time to a certain individual in person. The scammer told the couple this person would come by their house and pick up the cash. According to the Sheriff's Office, the couple met a male suspect at a street by their house to give him a total of $46,461 in cash.

After these events, the couple's bank was suspicious and called a family member of the couple about the concern. The family member then contacted the Sheriff's Office.

The very next day, the scammer called the couple once more and requested an additional payment of $40,000 in cash. The scammer said the same suspect would meet them to pick up the cash.

The Sheriff's Office was already involved in the investigation when the call was made, and learned the suspect would be at the 2300 block of S. 9th to pick up the cash. When the couple went to meet the suspect, authorities arrived to the scene with them and found two male suspects.

Arrested was 27-year old, Naga Teegala of Aurora, Illinois and 27-year old, Pruthwik Gallipally of Wheeling, Illinois. Both were booked into the Saline County Jail on requested charges Criminal Threat, Mistreatment of a Dependent Adult, Theft by Deception, Aggravated Intimidation of a Witness and False Impersonation. The total loss was listed to be at $126,461.

Sheriff: Kansas couple lost over $120,000 in scam

BARTON COUNTY—Law enforcement investigating a fatal hit-and-run in Barton County have arrested three juveniles.

Just after 6:30p.m. on Wednesday, the Barton County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a reported hit-and-run accident in the 100 block of Chisholm Trail, according to Sheriff Brian Bellendir. This location is at the extreme southeast corner of the city of Great Bend just outside city limits

First responders discovered a male victim identified as 58-year-old&nbsp;Curtis Scott Cregger of Great Bend. He lived in the area and had&nbsp;been struck by a motor vehicle. 

Officers immediately began CPR and other lifesaving measures in an attempt to aid the victim. He was transported to the hospital in Great Bend and was later pronounced deceased.&nbsp;

Investigation at the scene as well as witness statements indicated the possibility this was an intentional act. The Sheriff’s Office is investigating this incident as a homicide.

At 10:30a.m. Thursday, a Sheriff’s deputy stopped a vehicle near the intersection of Broadway at Jackson Street in the city of Great Bend. The vehicle matched the description provided by witnesses in the hit-and-run fatality from last night. Further investigation confirmed this was the vehicle involved. The 17-year-old juvenile driver was taken into custody at the scene. With assistance from the Great Bend Police Department two passengers who were in the vehicle at the time of the collision were also located and arrested. Both are juveniles aged 17 and 14.

After consultation with the Barton County Attorney Colin Reynolds, the driver has been charged with murder in the 2nd degree the two passengers were charged with accessory to murder in the 2nd degree, according to Bellendir.

NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street’s record-setting run kept rolling on Thursday, and stocks climbed after a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/inflation-economy-trump-federal-reserve-fabecefa501709184895bf73b3dc698a">mixed set of U.S. data</a>&nbsp;kept the path clear for the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/inflation-federal-reserve-powell-287af1c758a30d67f5384d17423c5029">Federal Reserve to cut interest rates</a>&nbsp;in order to boost the economy.

The S&amp;P 500 rose 0.8% and set an all-time high for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/stock-markets-inflation-jobs-rates-fed-502814f43e8a63d01a8f01eec81ba133">the third straight day</a>. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rallied 617 points, or 1.4%, and the Nasdaq composite gained 0.7%. Both also hit records.

Treasury yields eased in the bond market following the economic reports, which were some of the final data releases left that could sway the Federal Reserve’s thinking before its meeting next week. The unanimous expectation on Wall Street is that it will cut its main interest rate for the first time this year.

One of Thursday’s reports said&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/unemployment-benefits-jobless-claims-layoffs-labor-a69fc3afbbebe731c29824b855e3c83f">more U.S. workers applied for unemployment benefits</a>&nbsp;last week, an indication that the number of layoffs could be rising. It’s the latest discouraging signal on the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jobs-economy-revisions-labor-department-f4a29a2b948f7bce0d6558824ffe0fd5">job market</a>, where hiring has slowed substantially. The labor market had seemed to be settling into a low-hire, low-fire state, but an increase in layoffs could put it in an even tighter vise.

The hope on Wall Street has been for a slowdown, but a precisely measured one. The job market has to be weak enough to get the Fed to cut interest rates, which can give a kickstart to the economy and to prices for investments, but not so much that it causes a recession.

The Fed has been hesitant to cut interest rates throughout 2025 because of the threat that President Donald Trump’s tariffs could make inflation worse. That’s because lower interest rates can push inflation even higher.
