A local high school is giving Hays a chance to get a new look at an old classic this weekend. TMP-Marian is putting on Young Frankenstein, a musical from Mel Brooks based on his popular movie. The show runs November 1st and 2nd at 7:00 pm and November 3rd at 2:00 pm in the TMP Dreiling Theater, 1701 Hall Street. Tickets can be reserved for $7 either by calling 785-625-6577 or at the door.
Director Travis Grizzell told Hays Post that the music for this show as well as the adaptation for stage was written entirely by Mel Brooks. He said that this isn’t just a fun show for people that aren’t familiar with the original film.
“It’s pretty much the movie with added songs. All the jokes they know, the gags with Frau Blucher and the inspector; if they know the movie it’ll be fun for them to watch and wait for those things to play out.”
Grizzell told Scott Boomer on the KAYS Morning show Monday that it seemed like the perfect time to do Young Frankenstein, which will have a cast and crew of around 50 people.
“We’ve done some more traditional shows in the past couple of years; Hello Dolly, Anything Goes. I saw that our show was the day after Halloween and I thought; that time of year, I’ve run across this show and I love the old movie, why not, let’s go a little goofy for once and have some fun.”
He added that after Saturday evening’s performance, there will be a cast meet and greet following by a “Haunted Desserts” free will donation fundraiser put on by the Fine Arts Booster Club.
