After a lengthy Executive Session on Monday night, the USD 489 board voted to table action on the interim Superintendent. The board held interviews for the position on Friday.
The board did approve a recommendation by Management Consultant Randy Gustafson for the vacant Business/Finance Manager position.
Gustafson outlined the job description at the meeting. He recommended the person have an MBA with experience in accounting, human relations and management. The position will be responsible for providing overall management and leadership in the areas of accounting and finance, as well as overseeing the human resources function of the district and evaluate and coordinate all benefits negotiations for District employees. The salary is expected to be between $70,000 and $90,000 per year.
The board approved a contract for Shannon Demel, for one year, to fill the position of interim Assistant Middle School Principal at Hay Middle School.
Board approved the 2014 budget. District mill drop to 46.390, this is the seventh consecutive year the mill levy has dropped. Overall expenditures are set at $42,723,010, increase of over $2 million over 2013.
After a recommendation by board member James Leiker, the board approved advertising for one counselor and two school nurses to address some concerns brought board members. This would allow the three larger elementary schools to have one fulltime nurse and counselor at each school. The two smaller schools would still have one nurse and counselor covering both schools.
Dr. Will Roth said that enrollment in the school district was up about 30 students this year. Roth also announced he would cover Deputy Superintendent Richard Cain’s responsibilities until a more permanent replacement could be found. Cain leaves at the end of August.
The board voted to authorize the board president to sign the Glassman Chiller rental agreement and the soft drink contract with Pepsi for Hays High School.
Board approved that Cheryl Shubert would be appointed to approve district purchase orders.
The board approved a bid from Kansas Truck Equipment to purchase an activity bus for $164,224 with a 5-year bumper-to-bumper warranty for $2,212 for a total of $166,436. Deputy Superintendent Richard Cain said they had $170,000 budgeted in the Capital Outlay budget to purchase the bus. Also approved purchasing a new route bus for $144,347 from Kansas Truck Equipment with the -year bumper-to-bumper warranty. They had budgeted $140,000 in the Capital Outlay budget to purchase this bus.
The board also voted to approve the term sheet for the current agreement and future agreement with Catholic Diocese of Salina and USD 489 for access to TMP-Marian property for Victory Road. The board also agreed that they would have the districts architect help develop a re-construct or repair plan for the road.
