The Hays Larks picked up a pair of wins Saturday, defeating the Colorado Sox 7-3 and 5-2 in Denver. The victory moves Hays to 33-11 on the season. Sunday’s game was rained out. The Larks get their final tuneup before the NBC World Series Tuesday night when they host a group of former players in an alumni game at seven o’clock at Larks Park.
Game 1: Hays 7, Colorado 3
Nick Goza pitched five scoreless innings to pick up his sixth win of the season. Goza gave up three hits, striking out six and walking one.
The Larks scored two in the third on a Jarred Sanders single and Aaron Cornell sac fly to grab a 2-0 lead. Jay Sanders RBI single put them up 3-0 in the fourth. They would score three more times in the fifth on an error and Zair Koeiman two-run single.
Aaron Cornell’s RBI single made it 7-0 in the sixth. The Sox used a three-run homer in the bottom of the inning for their only runs.
Game 2: Hays 5, Colorado 2
Ross Vance allowed one earned run on six hits over four innings, striking out three and walking just one for the win.
Ty Gilmore and Brent Gillespie both drove in two runs. Gilmore’s groundout gave the Larks a 1-0 lead in the third.
After the Sox tied it with a run in the bottom of the third then took the lead with a run in the fourth, Hays would score two in the fifth on a Brent Gillespie two-run single to take the lead for good. The Larks tacked on two more in the sixth on single from Gilmore and Aaron Cornell.
