The Thomas More Prep – Marian football team is off to a 3-0 start but they face their biggest test this Friday night as they travel to LaCrosse to take on the undefeated Leopards.
Offense has not been a problem for the Monarchs the past two weeks. TMP totaled 546 yards of total offense last Friday against Larned in a 54-20 win. Senior Nick Hammeke has already thrown for over 900 yards in the first three games of the season. Three players have accounted for over 200 yards receiving led by junior Shane Zimmerman who has 363 yards.
The Herd showed off how well they can run their spread offense last week when they scored three times in the final three minutes of the first half against Larned. TMP has done well statistically in the second and third quarters so far this year, scoring 69% of their points in these quarters. Coach Jon Borer is looking for better starts and finishes from his team. TMP has scored 100 points in the last two weeks combined and is averaging 41 points per game (8th best in Class 3A).
While the Monarchs have been racking up points, LaCrosse has been piling up even more points. The Leopards have averaged 56 points per game (Best in Class 2-1A). LaCrosse returns three-year starter Tayler Stull at quarterback who has thrown for 302 yards and rushed for 269 yards so far this year. The Leopards have only given up 27 points all year and picked up a shutout last week defeating Decatur Community 43-0. LaCrosse hasn’t lost a regular season home game since 2005.
