A permanent memorial to 14 year old drowning victim Bryce Stropes was unveiled Sunday at the Ellis Municipal Swimming Pool. He died July 22, 2010, as a result of shallow water blackout.
Employees of the pool and other city offices, along with the entire community, have worked to turn the tragedy into something positive. A comprehensive education campaign about shallow water drowning has been instituted with assistance from FHSU Leadership Studies students. The Ellis pool received a Red Cross award last month for its improved safety program. Lifeguards now practice rescue techniques before each shift with their new rescue mannequin Charlie.
