TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – Gov. Sam Brownback is drawing fresh criticism form abortion rights supporters for naming an attorney who’s previously represented anti-abortion protesters to the state board that regulates doctors.
Wichita attorney Richard Macias said that he will be fair as a member of the State Board of Healing Arts. He also said as an attorney, his first duty is to uphold the law.
But abortion rights supporters see the appointment as another sign of the Brownback administration’s hostility toward abortion providers. The health department has tried to enact new regulations for abortion clinics, but the rules have been blocked by a federal judge because of a lawsuit filed by two of the state’s three providers.
Macias represented anti-abortion protesters in federal lawsuits arising from anti-abortion protests in 1991 and 2001.
