The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued warnings for people and pets to stay out of Memorial Park Lake in Great Bend; Meade State Lake; Logan City Lake; and Marion County Lake.
Tests on all four lakes found harmful levels of blue-green algae, which can cause a variety of health problems through swallowing or contact with the skin. Depending on the type of bacteria, the algae can produce headaches, rashes, fevers and gastrointestinal troubles and other symptoms.
KWCH-TV reports the state has also issued algae advisories for Marion Reservoir and Old Herington City Lake. The advisory allows for boating and fishing, but discourages all other contact with the water for people and pets.
