Maj. Gen. Lee Tafanelli, the state’s emergency management director, said Tuesday the 24 soldiers will augment security patrols and help with evacuations if needed in Doniphan County.
Tafanelli says the deployment was requested by county officials and the mayor of Elwood, which sits on the flood plain across the river from St. Joseph, Mo.
The National Guard already has 10 soldiers in Doniphan County patrolling levees and checking their conditions.
Voluntary evacuations are under way in Elwood. Many in the town of about 1,200 people remember well the flood of 1993, when the Missouri River rolled across fields and rose several feet high in houses and other buildings.
