⚾ HHS sweeps Dodge City to win WAC title

DODGE CITY – The Hays High baseball clinched the outright Western Athletic Conference title Tuesday with a pair of wins over Dodge City. The Indians did all of their scoring in one inning in a 3-2 win the opener then plated nine in the top of the first in an 18-2, four inning win in game two. The Indians improve to 11-3 overall and finish up WAC play 8-0.

Game 1: Hays 3, Dodge City 2 After Dodge City scored single runs in the first and third, the Indians score all three of their runs in the fourth on RBI singles from Cooper Johnson and Lex Lummus. Dyan Haselhorst gave them the lead with an RBI double.

Nolan Dreher allowed two runs on four hits with six strikeouts and four walks and picked up the win. Johnny Cano walked a batter and struck out two in the ninth and got the save.

Game 2: Hays 18, Dodge City 2 (4 innings) The Indians scored nine runs in the top of the first to take control early. Hays High’s first three batters, Cooper Sanders, Johnny Cano and Cooper Johnson, set the tone with doubles to open the game which scored the first two runs. With two outs Jack Weimer singled to left which made it 3-0. Carter Graham followed with an RBI single. Four straight walks plated two more runs then Johnson singled which scored two.

HHS added three more in the second on an RBI single from Graham, a double from Brett Schumacher who later scored on a wild pitch.

The Indians added another run in the third then scored five in the fourth to end it early.

Cooper Johnson and Jack Weimer both had three of the Indians 17 hits. Johnson drove in a career-high five runs. Weimer, Cano, and Graham all added two RBIs.

Corbyn Werth pitched the final two innings and picked up the win after starter Carter Graham pitched the first two frames. Both gave up one run on a combined four hits.

UP NEXT

HHS will head to De Soto where they will play Blue Valley Southwest. Friday they face Shawnee Mission North and Garnder Edgerton at Gardner-Edgerton.
