🥎HHS’ big offensive output leads to sweep in Garden City

GARDEN CITY – The Hays High Indians softball team combined to score 37 total runs and Aubree Thomas became the all-time strikeout leader in program history as the Indians sweep Garden City on the road Monday 16-0 and 21-2.

GAME 1: Hays 16, Garden City 0
Lakyn Zimmerman got the scoring start for the Indians with a sacrifice fly in the first inning, for a 1-0 Hays lead.

After a scoreless second the Indians offense exploded for their first of two seven-run innings.

They scored seven runs on seven hits in the top of the third inning. Dani Willeford triple in two runs, Riley Dreher drove in a run with an RBI single and then two batters later Avery Solida and Jaylee Summers connected on back-to-back RBI singles making it 6-0 Hays.

Later in the inning Haley Rees added an RBI single of her own and Lauren Klein plated a run on an RBI groundout to put Hays up 8-0.

Solida added a second RBI with a fourth inning groundout putting Hays up 9-0.

In the Indians second seven-run inning, they plated seven runs on five hits.

After a pair of singles to open the inning, Desarae Schmidt got the offense started with a two-run single. Later in the inning Dreher added another two-RBI single and then Summers walked with the bases loaded and Shae Augustine single in two runs giving Hays the 16-0 lead.

Hays’ Aubree Thomas allowed just two hits in five shutout innings and struck out six. She became the career strikeout leader at Hays High surpassing Melissa Beyer Schoepf with 369.

Riley Dreher drove in three runs and finished four-for-four at the plate.

GAME 2: Hays 21, Garden City 2
The offensive onslaught continued into game two for the Indians, scoring six runs in the first inning and then five each in the second, third and fourth in a 21-2 victory.

Desarae Schmidt led off the first with a double and then scored the game’s first run on a Dani Willeford ground out.

After the first of two Riley Dreher triples, Lakyn Zimmerman drove in a run with a single making it 2-0 Hays.

Later in the inning Jaylee Summers and Haley Rees had back-to-back RBI singles for a 4-0 Hays lead. The Indians also took advantage of a Garden City error, scoring two runs for a 6-0 lead.

In the five-run second Dreher homered scoring two runs, Rees singled in a run and Shae Augustine drove in two with a single making it 11-0 Hays.

Willeford and Dreher hit back-to-back run scoring doubles as part of a five-run third inning as the Indians took a 16-1 lead into the bottom of the third.

Schmidt tripled in a pair of runs, Zimmerman walked with the bases loaded and Augustine plated another run with a single putting Hays up 21-2.

Dreher finished four-for-four with a homerun, two triples and a double. She also drove in five runs. Solida finished three-for-three. Rees scored three times and Augustine drove in three.

Dreher earned the win in the circle. She allowed two unearned runs in four innings with three strikeouts.

Hays will play at TMP on Thursday.
