Free back-to-school haircut carnival helps students give back
The parking lot of the Hays Academy of Hair Design will be turned into a free kid’s haircut carnival this weekend.
Complete with free hot dogs, ice cream and kids games, HAHD Marketing Director Len Melvin said his staff and students look forward to the annual back-to-school carnival, held in conjunction with Celebration Community Church.
“It started out as a small event … to allow kids to get haircuts who aren’t privileged to do so,” Melvin said. “(Celebration members) contacted us, and we just thought it was the perfect opportunity for us to get our students involved with the community and teach them to give back by just giving their time.”
Free haircuts are given to children ages kindergarten to fifth grade, but all kids and families are welcome to attend the carnival whether or not they need a trim.
Melvin said last year approximately 700 people attended the event and 135 free haircuts were given — a goal Melvin said they hope to beat this year.
The free haircuts must be scheduled by calling Celebration Community Church at (785) 625-5483.
The event is Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at HAHD, 1214 E. 27th.
College students are not being left out of the chance to receive free back-to-school haircuts, manicures and other services, as well.
The event for college students is scheduled for Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., also at the HAHD parking lot.
