SALINA — With the help of Salina Police and the U.S. Post Office, an elderly Salina woman narrowly avoided becoming a victim of a phone scam.

The 92-year-old woman received a call about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday from a man who said she had won $3 million from Publishers Clearing House, along with a BMW that would be delivered from Ellis.

The man on the phone said to claim her prize she would need to pay taxes totaling $4,998.

The woman wrote out a check and placed it in the mail. After having second thoughts, she called police.

Salina Police contacted the Post Office who stopped the check from being mailed to an address in Pelion, S.C.
