Larks score in 9th to edge Dodge City

Pinch-hitter Evan Gruener (Fr., Bradley) drove in the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run on a grounder to second with one out in the ninth inning lifting the Hays Larks to a 2-1 win over Dodge City in their Jayhawk League opener at Cavalier Field in Dodge City Wednesday night.

Michael Burns (Fr., Wichita State), who led off the inning with a bunt single and had three hits in the game, scored the go-ahead run.

Ethan Landon (Fr., Kansas State) retired the first two batters in the bottom of the ninth before giving up a pair of singles. He induced a grounder back to the mound for the final out and pick up the save.

Nick Goza (Jr., Delta State) pitched a scoreless eighth for his second win of the season.

Starter DJ Carr (So., Chandler-Gilbert CC) held the A’s hitless through the first four innings before allowing an unearned run in the fifth. He goes seven innings, allowing three hits and walking three.

The Larks are now 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the Jayhawk League. They are in El Dorado for a key early three-game series starting Friday night. The Broncos pounded Derby 22-8 in their league opener Wednesday to move to 3-0.
