Four Hays Larks pitchers limited Newton to three hits as they throw their second shutout in three games in a 6-0 victory Tuesday night at Larks Park. The victory improves the Larks to 3-0 while the Rebels fall to 1-3. The win was No. 900 for Frank Leo, now in his 32nd season at Larks manager (900-650).
Starter Connor Sjolander (Fr., Emporia State) allowed just one hit over the first four innings and picks up the win. Derek Birginske (So., Arkansas State), Ethan Landon (Fr., Kansas State) and Tyler Kapp (Jr., New Jersey Institute of Technology) combined to allow just two hits over the last five innings with Kapp striking out four.
Tyler Detmer (Jr., Illinois-Chicago) went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored in his debut. His double in the second scored Nate Olinger (So., Colorado School of Mines) with the first run of the game. Detmer doubled and scored in the fifth to make it 3-0.
The Larks put the game away with three in the seventh on RBI singles from Detmer, Tanner DeVinny (Fr., Kansas State) and Kevin Czarnecki (Jr., Fort Hays State).
Hays opens Jayhawk League play in Dodge City Wednesday night. They then play three in El Dorado beginning on Friday.
The A’s opened their season with a 20-1 win over the New Mexico Renegades Tuesday.
