The Hays Larks start their season 2-0 after a doubleheader sweep of the Colorado Sox Saturday at Larks Park. Sunday’s series finale was rained out. The Larks won 4-0 and 4-3 in 11 innings Saturday.
Starter Nick Goza (Jr., Delta State) pitched four innings of two-hit ball to get the win in the opener. Alex Daniele (Fr., New Jersey Institute of Technology) allowed just one hit over the final three innings for the save.
The Larks scored a run in the first on a Derek Berginske (So., Arkansas State) fielder’s choice. They went up 2-0 in the second on a Michael Burns (Fr., Wichita State) double. Hays added two more in the fourth on a Nate Olinger (So., Colorado School of Mines) fielder’s choice and an error.
Starter David Koll (Jr., Bradley) gave up back-to-back singles, hit two batters and walked to more as the Larks fell behind 3-0 in the top o the first. It would stay that way until the sixth when they scored three to tie. Clayton Garland (Sr., Fort Hays State) singled home the first run then Derek Berginske drove in two with a double.
The Larks had two on with one out in the seventh but Garland hit into a double play to end the threat.
Hays finally broke the deadlock in the 11th on Kevin Czarnecki’s (Jr., Fort Hays State) sacrifice bunt which scored Evan Gruener (Fr., Bradley) from third.
Nate Olinger pitched three hitless innings of relief to pick up the win.
Teh Larks are off today and get one final tune up before conference play on Tuesday when they host Newton. The Larks begin league play Wednesday in Dodge City before playing three in El Dorado over the weekend.
