KFIX Rock News: Current Journey Singer Says Steve Perry Should “Come Back” To The Band
Many Journey fans were thrilled about the news that the band’s former frontman, Steve Perry, gave his first public performance in almost 20 years during the Memorial Day weekend, a surprise guest appearance at a concert by modern-rock group Eels in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Someone else who was excited about Perry’s return to the stage was Journey’s current singer, Arnel Pineda, who made some eye-opening comments about the historic event in a Twitter conversation with a female fan.
After someone posted a video of Perry’s performance with Eels on Pineda’s Twitter feed, Arnel wrote, “[H]e should come back. [H]is voice [is] still [there]. [M]issed that voice.”
When the female fan noted that it would be cool if Perry joined Journey on stage and sang together with Pineda, Arnel responded by saying, “[H]e can take over too. [I]ts his righteous [sic] place anyway. [Want to] see them happy together.”
The next day, Pineda took to Twitter again and posted a message regarding his feelings about singing with Journey. “Let me be clear,” he wrote. “[I] took Journey’s leap of faith coz they generously gave it to me. [Yet, I'll] never be addicted to FAME.”
Pineda’s comments come in the wake of recent rumors that he might be considering leaving Journey. In an interview in April, however, Arnel denied the reports and insisted, “As long as they need me I will be there, I’m never gonna quit on them.”
Having said that, Pineda did admit that in the event Perry wanted to rejoin Journey, he’d “be more than happy to give way,” noting that it would give him the chance to spend more time with his family.
Arnel, who currently is touring with Journey and the group’s co-headliner the Steve Miller Band, also is working on a solo album that he’s planning to release before the end of the year.
