The city of Hays will discuss a donation to the Wild West Festival committee to help create a memorial to the military and first responders at Thursday’s Hays City Commission work session.

The memorial, which would be located at Municipal Park off South Main Street, would include landscaping, panels and text with sponsor names. A large, permanent flagpole and a new park sign also would be included.

The city is being asked for $5,000 in matching funds for the improvements. The total cost is estimated at $16,390.

The festival committee also is asking the city rename the park “Wild West Festival Park.” According to the work session agenda, city staff will recommend approval of the project and renaming the park.
