KFIX Rock News: The Who To Release Making Of “Tommy” On DVD & Blu-Ray Next Month

tommyA new documentary about the making of The Who’s landmark 1969 rock opera Tommy is scheduled to hit stores on DVD and Blu-ray on March 11.

Sensation: The Story of Tommy delves into the creation of the famous and influential concept album about a deaf, dumb and blind boy who finds spiritual enlightenment by playing pinball.

The film features new interviews with surviving Who members Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey, as well as with engineer Bob Pridden and artist Mike McInnerney, who designed Tommy‘s album art.

Tommy was recorded during a transitional period for The Who, who were considering disbanding at the time.  The album’s success marked the emergence of the group as one of the premiere rock acts of its era.

“It was a gamble,” Daltrey explains in the documentary.  “It was a gamble that paid off immensely.”

The Sensation: The Story of Tommy DVD and Blu-ray currently are available for pre-order at The Who’s online store.  Deluxe bundles featuring a T-shirt and a poster are also available.
