John L. Allen Jr.

A Hays native and  Thomas More Prep-Marian High School alum will lead news coverage of Catholicism and the Vatican as an associate editor of The Boston Globe.

John Allen, 49, is a 1983 TMP graduate and has a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Fort Hays State University. His master’s degree in religious studies is from the University of Kansas.

Allen will make the move Feb. 1 from National Catholic Reporter, where he’s worked since 1998.  He has also served as an analyst of Vatican affairs for  CNN and NPR, and has written several books about the Catholic Church.

“There is a resurgence of global interest in the Catholic Church, inspired by the words and deeds of the newly-installed leader, Pope Francis,” said Boston Globe editor Brian McGrory in a news release. “There’s nobody in the nation better suited. John is basically the reporter that bishops and cardinals call to find out what’s going on within the confines of the Vatican. His inexhaustible energy, supported by extraordinary insights, is legendary.”
