Study: US spewing more methane than reported; Kansas being blamed.

National Academy of Science

National Academy of Science

(AP) —A new study says the United States is spewing 50 percent more methane than the federal government estimates. Much of it is coming from just three states: Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas.

Scientists say that means methane may be a bigger global warming issue than they thought. Methane is 21 times more potent at trapping heat than carbon dioxide, the most abundant global warming gas, although it doesn’t stay in the air as long.

Much of that extra methane seems to be coming from the belches, flatulence and manure of livestock, and leaks from refining and drilling for oil and gas. The study is published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.

The study figures that in 2008 the U.S. gave off 49 million tons of methane.

    BS.

    • WeeTodd

      That’s is part of it.

    • Chris

And what qualifications do you have that would validate your opinion over the data gathered by climate scientists?

      • call it bs

It was a joke, son, a joke. You libs take ourselves so seriously. Time will tell…have a burger.

        • Chris

Sarcasm on the internet! Because it’s so easy to see voice inflection from text.

    • Yahooserious

I’m a liberal and I understood the sarcasm. I thought it was funny. I love beef, love it. Cow litter? how to do you solve a sh*t problem? I have no idea.

      • WeeTodd

You solve a sh*t problem by voting them ALL out of office!!!

        • Chris

because the ones that would take their place would be so much better?

Isn’t that what Huelskamp ran his campaign on?

  • Drill baby drill

Maybe we should just leave the stuff in the ground where it isn’t hurting anything.

    • A_citizen_patriot

      Yeah, who needs vehicles right?

      • bike man

        ha ha I dont

        • A_citizen_patriot

If you ever go to the store and buy things you are relying on trucks.

      • WeeTodd

Maybe we should ban cars and then the City of Hays can turn ALL of the streets into bike lanes.

    • Chris

This article is talking about methane, a lot of which is produced from cows. Soooo, you’re saying we should leave the cows in the ground? That doesn’t sound very nice.

      • passin_threw

chris, sometimes a guy has to read the entire article to know all that was reported.

Beware of who is funding the study. Research results tend to skew towards the money supplier. On a lighter note, we could slaughter all cattle until they are listed as an endangered species.

    • Chris

The study was conducted by the National Academy of Science. Here is where their funding comes from.

“About 85 percent of funding comes from the federal government through contracts and grants from agencies and 15 percent from state
governments, private foundations, industrial organizations, and funds
provided by the Academies member organizations. All funds, regardless of their source, are accepted by the academies with very stringent
conditions to ensure that the acceptance of any funds does not influencethe objectivity, scope, method of study, or membership of a study group.”

      • american

good thing the government is not corrupt

        • Chris

The government isn’t doing the research, bud.

The research is being done by scientists who had said that regardless of where the money comes from, objectivity and scientific methodology will still be adhered to.

Statements such as yours really show the level of ignorance around here.

If you really wanted to inject some intelligence into the discussion, you would try to find out how the study doesn’t fit in with other scientific data.

          • pc not

The science is not settled….now lets see…what were all of those emails from England about? And, recent temp declines…science 25 yrs ago predicted an ice age by now. If algore really believed this to be anything more than money for him and de-capitalization of the world economy…he would stop flying his private jet. So Chris….how do we feed the world. Fish fart, too.

          • Chris

There was no consensus of an ice age. That was a small minority…just like the small minority of climate change deniers around today.

What recent temperature declines? Show me cited articles. Climate is not the same as weather.

Fish do not produce copious amounts of methane like bovine do. Please take an elementary level of biology before commenting and showing your intelligence.

          • Chris

And the science is settled. Over 97% of CLIMATE scientists agree that the Earth is warming, and the evidence points to humans as at least a partial cause.

So, tell me, what credentials do you have that make you more intelligent than these thousands of climate scientists? Oh, Fox News, duh.

      • Hmmm…

85⅝? 85 and BS look ironically similar when written. Coincidence?

        • passin_threw

          congrats on that new baby!

  • Beano

Has anyone let the cattle know that their burping, farting, and pooping has become downright unacceptable?
