Not great news for pheasant hunters

pheasant hunt(AP) — Kansas pheasant hunters aren’t likely to see many of the birds when the season begins this weekend.

State wildlife experts say drought during most of the nesting and brooding season, combined with an already low breeding populations, will make it difficult to find birds this season, which begins Saturday.

Kurt Hudson, Kansas natural resource officer, says recent moisture could improve next year’s harvest. But he says that this hunting season is “going to be pretty bleak.”

The state wildlife agency says the best chance of hunting success will be in the southeastern part of the state.

maybe they should cancel the pheasant hunting season this year as well as next and double up the deer season…..? Pheasant hunting has been less than impressive the past few years and a few re-populating years might be beneficial. Plus if they up the # of deer a person can shoot that will be less on the road for people to hit. Win-Win situation?

i vote yes on the deer idea.

I agree with you 100 percent. I have said they need to say no pheasant hunting for a couple of years. And let people go after more Doe’s during Deer season.

WHY HAS THE KANSAS WILDLIFE AND PARKS LEFT THE BAG LIMIT AT 4 BIRDS DAILY WITH SUCH A DECLINE IN POPULATION. THEY REALLY CARE ABOUT WHAT IS GOING ON?????????

Rooster pheasants mate with multiple hens. So by shooting only roosters, hunting barely contributes to the population. Weather is the largest contributing factor to the pheasant population and the wildlife and parks have no control over that.
