KFIX Rock News: The Doors’ Robby Krieger, Steve Vai, Others Featured On William Shatner’s New Prog-Rock Album

shatinEveryone’s favorite starship captain, William Shatner, is set to boldly go where he’s never gone before.

The 82-year-old Star Trek star will release a star-studded progressive-rock concept album titled Ponder the Mystery on October 8.

The album features all-original songs co-written by Shatner and one-time Yes guitarist Billy Sherwood, who also produced the record.

An eclectic lineup of well-known musicians from a variety of genres contributed to the project, including ex-Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman, The Doors’ Robby Krieger, Edgar Winter, Steve Vai, Al DiMeola, the late George Duke, and country star Vince Gill.

Ponder the Mystery tells the story of a despondent man who reflects on his life late one day.  The album charts the man’s emotional journey to regain his happiness as the sun sets and the sky darkens.

Shatner has scheduled a trio of California concerts next month where he will perform the album in its entirety with Sherwood’s band Circa:, which also features founding Yes keyboardist Tony Kaye.  More dates are expected to be announced soon.

Ponder the Mystery is the follow-up to Shatner’s 2011 album, Seeking Major Tom, which featured the actor performing a variety of classic-rock cover songs, accompanied by many musical luminaries.

Here are the confirmed dates for Shatner’s Ponder the Mystery performances:

10/23 — Hermosa Beach, CA, Saint Rocke
10/24 — Agoura, CA, The Canyon Club
10/25 — San Juan Capistrano, CA, The Coach House
