KFIX Rock News: Expanded Jimi Hendrix Box Set To Be Released Next Week

jimipurpleAn updated version of The Jimi Hendrix Experience’s self-titled 2000 four-CD box set will hit stores on August 20.

The new edition of the retrospective, which is informally known as the “Purple Box,” will be augmented with four extra tracks.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience offers a career-spanning look at the late guitar legend and his group, and is made up entirely of rare and unreleased studio and live recordings from the years 1966 through 1970.

Among the tunes features on the 60-track compilation are alternate renditions of memorable tunes such as “Purple Haze,” “Foxey Lady,” and “Little Wing,” as well as rarities like “Country Blues” and “It’s Too Bad.”

The newly added tracks to the box set are a 1968 live performance of Bob Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone” that Hendrix’s played at San Francisco’s Winterland; the original studio version of “Peace in Mississippi,” previously available only as the B-side of the 2010 “Valleys of Neptune” single; a rare 1967 live rendition of “Burning of the Midnight Lamp”; and the original U.K. single mix of “The Stars That Play with Laughing Sam’s Dice.”

The last-mentioned track has never been available on any previous U.S. release.
