East Edges West; Hays High’s Cardinal Finds the End Zone
The East edged the West 22-19 Saturday night at Yager Stadium in Topeka to end their seven-game losing streak at the Kansas Shrine Bowl. The East scored on a halfback pass then converted on the two-point conversion with 3:04 to play in the comeback win.
The West drove inside East territory but an interception by Pittsburg’s Spencer Bernhardt in the endzone ended the hopes of the comeback.
Scott City’s Drew Kite, a Fort Hays State basektball signee, caught a seven-yard touchdown pass off a fake field goal with 4:02 to play in the second quarter to give the West a 6-0 lead. Hays High’s David Cardinal scored on a two-yard run put the West up 13-6 at the 6:39 mark of the third quarter.
Cardinal finished with nine carries for 20 yards. LaCrosse’s Kip Keeley had nine carries for 23 yards and hauled in five catches for 77 yards. Phillipsburg’s Sean Newlin carried the ball four times for 1o yards and punted seven times with a 37.1 yard average.
