Clayton Garland went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs to lead the Hays Larks to a 5-4 victory over the Derby Twins Sunday night at Larks Park. The Larks take the series 2-1 and improve to 29-11 overall and 21-10 in the Jayhawk League where they maintain a two-game lead over Wellington. The Twins fall to 16-10 overall and 13-19 in the Jayhawk League.
The Twins used a twp-out homer in the first off the bat of Dylan Boston to grab a 2-0 lead. Garland hit a solo homer to lead off the second to get the Larks on the board. Brent Gillespie’s leadoff homer in the third pulled Hays within a run at 3-2.
Gillespie would tie the game an inning later with a sacrifice fly to center scoring Clayton Garland. Garland would then give the Larks the lead for good with two-run single to center.
DJ Carr, the first of three relief pitchers for Hays, picks up the win with an inning and a third of hitless relief. David Owen pitched the final two innings for his fifth save.
Larks starter Ross Vance, a West Virginia signee, allowed four runs, two earned, on five hits over 4 2/3 innings in his debut.
