KFIX Rock News: Seattle College Names Former Guns ‘N’ Roses Bassist “Distinguished Alumni”
Due to touring commitments in South Africa, McKagan was unable to attend the event. His recorded acceptance speech can be viewed below.
The bassist became interested in economics in 1994 after reviewing financial records from his Guns N’ Roses days and realizing he didn’t understand enough about the system.
“I made money in my 20s, became sober in my 30s, looked around, and didn’t know who I could trust for money advice,” said McKagan.
“Going to college was a main driver for me. Attending Seattle Central was an awesome experience — it taught me a lot about discipline in a great way.”
“Having a college education has also helped my reputation,” he added.
“Ever since, people take me more seriously in my industry, because most people in the music industry do not go to college.”
