KFIX Rock News: Deadheads Unite To Protect Name Of Jerry Garcia Amphitheater

amphSAN FRANCISCO (AP) – San Francisco’s parks department is considering altering the name of the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater, and Deadheads are not happy about that.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports more than 1,100 people have signed an online petition opposing any name change.

The parks department wants to enter a partnership with the nonprofit group Levitt Pavilions, which helps fund renovations and put on free shows.

The proposed name would be “Levitt Pavilion San Francisco at Jerry Garcia Meadows.”

The 2,000-seat venue hosts the annual Jerry’s Day music festival but fewer than 10 events a year.

Critics say handing the venue over to Levitt would rob it of its independent spirit.
