Sound Off: Sales Tax or Property Tax?

Have you read the letter from Ellis County Commissioners in the Hays Post Editor’s Choice Opinion Section?

The letter begins, “It is important to clear up misconceptions regarding the Ellis County safety and security .5% sales tax so that voters know exactly what is going on. The question the commission needs to have the voters answer is this: does Ellis County pay for these projects with a sales tax or an increase in property taxes?”

Which tax do you prefer?  Tell us in our comments section below.Money - Cash 002

I hope all vote for sales tax. We pay enough property taxes. In Ellis not very many showed up for the meeting. More County people than public. Sad but that is how all public meetings are. Ellis has projects also which some of this money could be used for. Streets would be nice. Water lines that are in need and patched so many times. But now we might need money to go outside Ellis and drill for water. It could come down to point we haul water in to put out a fire. School USD 388 School bonds for needs of new. 10 million plus. Which would mean higher mills and property taxes. Which are already to high. These are things Ellis council will have to vote on in consider of what Ellis needs also. Yes we think it’s important to have Ems, Rural Fire, Sheriff. The time is coming when this will over whelm us all. Local level is the tip of ice berg.

Sales tax, our property taxes are high enough. This also lets the many renters in hays and visitors help pay for these important projects. We pay for projects in other communities when we visit them. Sales tax spreads the burden to everyone that spends money, not just property owners.

It sounds like there isn’t any way out of it. Either vote for a raise in sales tax or they will the property tax. First of all I rent and part of my rent is figured in on the expenses a landlord has. It’s also possible that landlords would increase there rent to cover an increase in property tax. So renters are affected by an increase in property tax.

    • True but…

Don’t be ignorant. Renters pay indirectly for property tax.

I agree sales tax way better though.

    • taxed to death

Us renters pay property taxes, every time the landlord’s taxes get raised our rent goes up accordingly. Don’t play us for dupes, nobody is that dang ignorant to think renters don’t pay through the nose already. Funny how the current Commisioners state in their letter that this was brough up 10 years ago but none of the past Commissioners had the common sense to address the issues then. Nope typical Ellis County/ Hays Commisioners, we will just push it off and let it be handled by future Commisions.

    I have a some Questions?
Why do we have 4 times the amount of ems workers than we use to? The town hasn’t grown that much.
Where is all this extra space we need for the jail coming from? Is this a permanent fix or a band-aid that will need to be addressed again in 5 years?
Is all the money we will be saving from not having to house prisoners in other jails and transporting prisoners going to go to pay of the bond? Are we going to sell the 2 extra vehicles they need to transport prisoners to pay off the bond?
Can this not be done in stages so we don’t have to pay so much interest?
This is not a vote for sales tax or property tax. This is a vote to approve sales tax. I am tired of the commissioners pushing this with scare tactics. They need to remember they work for the citizens of the county. If they don’t do what the citizens want them to do we can and will vote them out.

    • http://hayspost.com Scare Tactics

Scare tactics is right, Swede said last night in the meeting if we don’t vote to approve this that the Commissioners could decide to take the EMS and Company #6 out of the Ellis area and move it all to Hays to save money.
I have to admit I was less than impressed with his rhetoric, disappointing to say the least.

Apparently HaysPost can’t take criticism, as they deleted my comment about being seemingly one-sided for passing the tax. I suppose this will be deleted as well. I guess the truth hurts!

    • Vance

What? Missed it. HaysPost makes it fun. Taxes not so fun. That editorial makes me sick.

  • Reaper

He we go with more taxes. Don’t we pay high enough taxes on everything the way it is. Hell we just got done or still are paying taxes on the not so needed sports complex outside of Hays. We have one of the highest sales taxes in the State. I think it is funny how they are going to get it one way or the other regardless. I think it is about time to move somewhere else.

    • Chris

Don’t let the door hit ya on the way out.

    • http://hasyspost Goodbye

Don’t let the door hit you in the a$$ on the way out, last i knew we pay taxes almost everywhere we go.

    • Kansas Native

Good luck to you and btw, don’t forget to fill out your change of address postcards.

    • pfonz

      Reaper
You have four ways you can go ….North, South ,East, or West see ya !!!

    • http://hayspost.com # 12

You think you taxes too munch and you don’t even know that the sports complex tax expired at the end February or March. Didn’t you feel your wallet get real heavy then?. or are you just want of them “job creating” takers that think they don’t have to pay taxes?

  • HIDEAWAY

IF ONE OF THE TAXES GO THOUGH THERE WILL BE MORE PEOPLE MOVING OUT OF HAYS. HAYS WASTED ENOUGH MONEY LOOK AT THE POOL, SPORTS COMPLEX, EVERYTHING IS OVER DONE THIS IS WHY HAYS CAN NOT MAKE ANY MONEY. PEOPLE HAVE TO GET THIS IN THERE HEADS HAYS IS NOT A BIG CITY BUT THEY WANT TO ACT LIKE A BIG CITY. I WOULD SAY DO WITH WHAT YOU GOT. NO MONEY DON’T BUILD IT.

    • Chris

See ya! Hopefully your new location has classes on how to push the ‘caps lock’ button.

    • http://hayspost.com american

Hideaway, #1 there is only one tax increase to this , #2 the city is not suppose to make money, its not a business , #3 either get busy living or get busy dying , #4 we get money for city or country projects by taxes, who paid for the sewer, water and street to your house? Grow up

      • HIDEAWAY

ASK AMERICAN HE SEEMS TO HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS. HE IS LOOKING OUT FOR SOME ONE.

        • http://hayspost.com american

Looking out the the good of the whole county, not just my selfish pocketbook.

          • HIDEAWAY

IF YOU ARE LOOKING OUT FOR THE WHOLE COUNTY YOU SHOULD HAVE STARTED YEARS AGO.

  • http://hayspost.com Shame

My issue with this situation is that this has been a problem for a long time. The Commisioners and department heads could of started planning for this 10 years ago. Its not as if this is a new problem, they could of saved a huge down payment up for this project instead of asking us tax payers to come up with $14 million all at once.

    • True but…

you wont even notice it Shame. You’ve been paying for the half cents sales tax for years. Sales tax is constitutional and it isn’t taxing our labor.

  • Homeowner

Didn’t my property taxes just go up?? I mean my home value (and everyone else I know) went up $10k+ this year so I am paying higher property taxes now…where is that money going???

    • http://hayspost.com american

For schools and such? and you don’t know me , mine didn’t go up and have you ever heard of them going down?

  • http://hayspost.com business

I’m a retail business owner and times are tough right now, its been a rough first quarter. I’m scared of any tax increase right now, I just don’t think its a good time for any of it. I understand its needed but its been needed for years and we have figured it out.

    • http://hayspost.com american

Maybe you are in the wrong lin e of business, or maybe if you paid the help better they would not be bad mouthing you to there friends and they would be more incline to trade with you. Ellis county economy is very good compared to the rest of ks

      • Citizen

If the Ellis county economy is so good right now, we should have plenty of revenue to make improvements w/o raising taxes.

        • http://hayspost.com american

Are you not paying attention? the only way the state, county or city or school districts get money is through taxes ,sales and property and small user fees like building permits and dog tags , so even in a good economy how do the government pay for everything without taxes? or as you called it “plenty of revenue”

      • http://hayspost.com ????

What the heck are you talking about??

        • http://hayspost.com american

What the heck are you asking about??????????????

  • kansan forever

asking if we want it thru sales tax or property tax is about the same as asking if we want lube or no lube. it would be nice however if locals would shop and purchase locally instead of going to wichita and salina. there sure are a lot of folks shopping out of town……

    • http://hayspost.com Selection

Less selection and higher sales Tax.

    • HIDEAWAY

I AM ONE OF THEM THAT SHOP SALINA, AND WICHITA AND A LOT ON LINE. WHAT DOES HAYS HAVE WALMART.

      • http://hayspost.com american

All the women complain that there are no clothing stores for them in hays and Wal-Mart $ucks

    • http://hayspost.com american

      always as for lube

      • http://hayspost.com american

        ask

  • Frank

Many states have exemptions for tax on food and clothing as they are considered necessities. I could support something like that if done locally and minimizes impact of families trying to put food on the table.

    • http://hayspost.com american

According to conservatives those people are on food stamps and welfare any way

  • Uncle Thomas

Yes, the county leaders/admin should have a plan…ten years may be too progressive so lets only focus on five years. Then they should have training in productivity…yes efficiency.
I dont mind living in a progressive community with new schools, new public buildings, admins which lead their field in pay, but we have paid these taxes for years and have very little.
I vote yes to the sales vs. the property tax.
Now having said that it hurts me to know that in 10 years we will have the same story all over again due to lack of visionary leadership.

  • Uncle Thomas

Next it will be…oh my all of our emergency vehicles in the city and the county are worn out. We should have asked for five per year and kept the rotation going, but we couldnt plan that far in advance so now we need all new ones at one time!!!!
    Hurry the sky is falling!

    • http://hayspost.com Wore Out

A lot of County Fire Trucks are wore out already. There are some in Service from the Late 1970′s, at least 4 for 5.
Company3,4,5,6 and 7 all have at least one truck from the 1970′s and Co #6 actually has two out of there four.

      • Uncle Thomas

See my crystal ball does work…:)

I think we need a “State of the County” report, which includes the city. Let’s wait a few years more until we can no longer find repair parts and it becomes a crisis to replace these trucks. At that time the city will need new vehicles and we can keep the 1/% tax going to fund….:( Wait we have a “sunset clause”, which next will be a “sunrise claus”…neither are related to the well known “Santa Claus”.

  • disgusted

I feel like we are being threatened to vote for the sales tax. I feel that if the voters say NO to the sales tax, that should be the end of the project as it stands. We should not have a gun to our heads in the form of increased property taxes to force us in favor of the sales tax. I am very disgusted and disappointed in the commisioners and how this project is taking shape. Perhaps instead of trying to do all of these projects at once, they should be done in stages starting with the jail, then ems and eventually the fire dept.

    • Frank

Exactly! I agree that these projects need funding, but this is a BAD plan! They need to bring something better to the citizens that is more amenable, NOT threats!
