KFIX Rock News: Doors Drummer’s New Book Hits Stores, Book Signing Scheduled For Denver
Doors drummer John Densmore’s new memoir, The Doors: Unhinged, was officially released on Wednesday.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer is set to head out on a book-signing tour that’s been organized in conjunction with the latest installment of the Record Store Day campaign, which takes place this Saturday.
The promotional trek will begin that day at Bull Moose Records in Scarborough, Maine, and will stop at a variety of other independent music retailers through a May 25 visit to Fingerprints in Long Beach, California.
The Doors: Unhinged focuses on the bitter legal battle Densmore fought with his two fellow surviving band mates, keyboardist Ray Manzarek and guitarist Robby Krieger, to stop them from using the group’s name in their own side project.
That lawsuit came on the heels of another interband conflict in which Densmore vetoed a $15 million deal to use the group’s music in a Cadillac ad campaign.
While the drummer is highly critical of Manzarek and Krieger throughout the memoir, he ends the book with a letter in which he offers some words of positivity and healing toward his old collaborators.
In a new interview on CBS This Morning, Densmore explains that his actions documented in the book were motivated by a desire to uphold the wishes of late Doors singer Jim Morrison.
“Some folks were mad at me for doing this but, really, it was from the heart of trying to keep the purity of our original vision,” he points out.
“People fell in love over ‘Light My Fire’ or were in Vietnam and it helped them get through. It’s the soundtrack to people’s lives and that’s pretty precious to me.”
Densmore also notes that maintaining harmonious relationships between band members over a long period of time, in general, is extremely difficult, comparing it to “polygamy without the sex.”
He also reports he’s taken tentative steps toward reestablishing communication with Manzarek and Krieger.
“The road to healing has opened,” he tells CBS This Morning. “I can hang with them, play music…we’ll see.”
