For the second year in a row, Hays Regional Airport has surpassed 10,000 boardings. The final year-end audit is not complete, but airport officials are projecting that the past year had nearly 10,200 boardings. Hays Public Works Director I.D. Creech says surpassing the 10,000 mark makes the airport eligible for $1 million in federal funding for improvement projects.
Additional funding could allow the airport to make improvements to the runway to accommodate larger aircraft and address some of the projects that have been on hold including wildlife fencing, apron rehabilitation, updated snow removal equipment and improvements to the terminal building.
The Fly Hays Committee’s efforts to promote the airport are credited at least in part for the passenger numbers. That group was initially funded through a grant from the US Small Community Air Service Development Program. That grant ended last month, but the committee will remain intact and continue its marketing efforts.
