The Fort Hays State Tigers went on a 44-18 run spanning the first and second halves after falling behind by 10 with 7:15 ot play in the first half and defeat Nebraska-Kearney 82-70 Saturday afternoon at the Health and Sports Center. The victory is the Tigers seventh-straight over the Lopers and their seventh-straight overall as they improve to 17-6 nd 11-4 in the MIAA where they remained tied for first with Central Missouri. The Lopers have lost three-straight and fall to 6-16 and 3-11 in the MIAA.
Dwayne Brunson scored a career-high 35, hitting 14-of-16 from the field and 7-for-7 at the free throw line. He also led the Tigers with seven rebounds. Lance Russell added 18 points and Craig Nicholson 11 despite playing just 20 minutes due to foul trouble.
The Tigers builtAfter building a 19-point lead with 7:03 to play, the Tigers had to hold on as the Lopers pulled within nine late.
Nebraska-Kearney came out on fire and led by 10 with 7:15 to play in the first half, but the Tigers answered with an 11-0 run and took their first lead at 30-29 on a Lance Russell layup. They would lead by as many as four before settling for a 39-37 halftime lead.
The Tigers shoot a season-high 62-percent and were 16-of-18 from the free throw line. The Lopers, who hit on 78-percent of their shots over the first 10 minutes but hit only 35-percent in the second half and 43-percent for the game.
