The 30th edition of the Hays City Shootout received a touching moment between the Hays High girls’ and boys first round games on Thursday night.  The tournament was renamed The Gerald Mitchell Hays City Shootout in memory of Gerald Mitchell who was one of the driving forces behind the start of the tournament.

Mitchell passed away in June of 2012 and his wife Kathryn was on hand to receive a plaque in his honor.

Mitchell, a Osborne native, taught in Gorham and Plainville before landing in Hays.  He taught in Hays from 1978 through 2005.  Mitchell served as head coach for the girl’s basketball team and was also an excellent track coach.  Overall Mitchell compiled over 300 wins in his basketball coaching career and athletes to the KSHSAA State Track meet 17 consecutive years.
