Steven wright was the hays Unibomber not failure to appear

  • Hmmm

So we have the 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th & 20th…6 days and three arrests logged. .5 arrests per day by the Ellis County Sherriff’s Department. Now if I only knew how many deputies on patrol we could do the math per day. Someone is not pulling thier weight at the sherriffs department. What is really said is how many investigators/detectives do we pay? How many other administrative/management personnel are paid. No darn wonder we have trouble with budgets in the county. Hopefully we will have commissioners that will ask some questions about who is doing what??? Are reviews done on an annual basis of this department? Are the law enforcement personnel required to maintain peak physical condtion? Do they qualify with weapons?

    • Someone

You do realize what a Sheriff’s department does, right?

  • Just got more Interesting

By my count its only two, Unabomber Steve must have been a mistake because I think he should be over in the Hays PD arrest log. If you go to the post over there and read the comments and the flaws someone pointed out in this very regard.
Im going to add to it. In the Official Press Release it clearly says he was pulled over by a Hays Police Officer and that Officer discovered the Weapon of Mass Destruction. I hate to assume but you would think the HPD Officer made the arrest then. Furthermore ECSO is not even one of the accredited Agency’s in the release Explain that.
And if the benchmarks for number of arrests you think the Sheriffs Office should have is being measured against the HPD I dont think that is a fair standard. I think the Sheriff Office is a little old school and has the same old management in that well they still respects the rights of the citizen in the county.
Ive lived here 40 years and now regularly see a car pulled over in the evening hours somewhere in town with its occupants on the curb and there car being searched. Ive seen this more in the last 6 months than i have in my entire life. Talk to the officers and they will tell you exactly why this is, they told me. About the exact opposite of the Dept next door.

  • Yeah

    What a total fluff piece

  • hmmmmmmm

You know what I have noticed lately? It is how so many people are looking at degrading our law enforcment, anyway they can. Anywhere from dont chase a motorcycle because it may crash, to why so many officers repsonded to a bomb, then now people are complaining about not arresting enough people. What do you people want, chase them and arrest them, or let them go. MAKE UP YOUR MIND!!!

  • Hmmm

I am merely asking the question where are our tax dollars going? Several weeks back I noticed the ECSO arrest log was infrequently listed on HaysPost and when it was there were one or two arrests. The HPD had triple or quadruple the activity in the same amount of time. I am not saying one or the other is better, my concern is what is the ECSO doing? Yes they have a jail to manage and prisoners to transport. Yes they serve the papers of the court. How many deputies are on the streets? How many investigators are on the streets? How many “generals” are commanding the troops? I believe for our buck we are not receiving a value. I do not see any new programs being introduced to the public. I do not hear of the sherriff making any press releases or comments to the public, but there again it is not an election year for him (unopposed) so one would expect him to be comfy. I think everyone is comfy with their paychecks and wearing out office chairs!

  • Hmmm

As for the degrading law enforcement…well there job is difficult! A majority of the folks they have contact with is in a negative/enforcement type of manner. I am not bashing law enforcement. The Sherriff is an elected official and he needs to be progressive and lead the department. Is he progressive? Are we receiving our tax dollar worth? No one can seem to answer my questions? Are the deputies evaluated annually? My guess is it is the ol buddy system! Everyone’s reviews are stellar and they receive the set financial increase each year. In the high risk job they do are they required to maintain physical condition? Do they have enough training each year just to get by or does the Sherriff push them to exceed…my guess he and the rest of the department show up for work and cross off the calendar how many days remain till retirement.

  • A

This is the arrest log you jack@$$es. Read the paper look in the public record and quit your whining. If you look for it the information is out there, this is only one resource.

  • Hays citizen

If you recount back to the original story about Steven Wright you would recall that he was also arrested on an out of county warrant. More than likely he was arrested on the spot for his crimes he committed in Hays. Once they got him to the jail is probably when it was ran and found that he had a warrant as well. Hence the fact that it went under the sheriff departments log.

  • Hmmm

In response to “A”…If you call the HDNews a paper, well you need an education! Not whining merely asking a few questions. You must be law enforcement or related. My guess a white male with a high school education…30′s? It appears as if a few questions has struck a nerve with you. No need to feel threatened, only asking where the tax dollars are being spent.

  • A

Nope, you’re whining. the have telephones, e-mail, and commission meetings. If you really wanted some information you could get it. I think you are just lazy and find it easier to sit at a keyboard and complain. : )

    • Hmmm

Is a public venue not one of the best means to ask questions? The telephone I have tried to contact the Sheriff, did not return my call. Email and commission meetings? The public needs to be aware of the quality of the counties law enforcement! You are now changing your tune…the other day it was news print you encouraged. Are you a politician?

  • A

    *they

  • A

“If you look for it the information is out there, this is only one resource.” To Hmmm, thats a quote from me and hell no Im not a politician! Far from it how come you like focusing on a person trying to judge and jump to conclusions on who i am instead of the issue you are oh so concerned about?

    • Hmmm

Please read your voluminous diatribe…now look in the mirror before you place blame. You should keep your comments to the subject and not the individuals making the comments O Righteous One. You are criticizing me for something you started…really?

  • Hays

to the personal called “hmmm’ how do you go off and say he is in his 30s, high school degree and so forth. What the hell does that have to do with anything. If you are so worried about where your tax dollars are going then do something about it, besides sit and write about it on hays post. Not many people check this site. People like you that constantly have to put down the people that work hard for this county for so little pay is degrading. They do a lot more work then they get paid for including working overtime every single week. I know a lot of sherriff officers and police officers here in Hays that put in over 60 hours a week and are only getting paid the 40 because they are salaried.

Our tax dollars are going to people that do great at their job and who are protecting the people in this community.

So you can get off your ass, away from the computer, and go make a differance just like the sherriff and police officers in this town do.

and if you were wondering, i am a white person, with three years of college under my belt, in the justice studies field, and will graduate in a year. I don’t just have a high school degree. Even though education has nothign to do with any of this, but you seem to have an issue with it.

And I have to agree with Hays & A, if you are truly concerned about your tax dollars at work I would reccommend that you attend County Commission and/or City Commission meetings (you do appear to have extra time on your hands).

I honestly believe law enforcement officers due best they can . On that note it is always good to question if the county an city of hays is getting a good value every year and that everyone from local to county officers of the court an legal system even attorneys an judges are earning there pay ?? So if that truly is a concern write them down an percent them to county meeting and or as a note to the editor to investigate as local papers can. Have them investigate things a like cost to jail people an average stay at county expense? I am sure that gets to be expensive there is one couple still staying in jail with out a trial date set and has been a yr…. The husband is at county expense getting a 3 mental eval….the Snavely case is never ending and always quiet seems forgotten if you are truly worried about counting expenses I suggest check on expenses for jail as well as when over crowding accrues the expense when moving our inmates from Ellis county to other counties… See there are a lot of things to ask about not just hard working officers risking there lives everyday giving us a good value for there pay
