Big Inning Lifts Larks Past Liberal
The Hays Larks take advantage of seven Liberal errors and defeat the Bee Jays 11-6 Saturday night to move into a tie for first in the Jayhawk League with Dodge City. Liberal falls a half-game back after having their three-game win streak snapped. The Larks have won four straight and are now 22-10 overall and 16-10 in the Jayhawk League.
The Larks score one in the first then take control with six in the second thanks in part to four Liberal errors. Zair Koeiman drove in two with a two-out single. MacKenzie Handel, Austin Darby and Elvin Rodriguez also drove in runs.
Hays built an 8-0 lead before the Bee Jays rallied with two in the fifth and three in the sixth, but would get no closer.
Starter Justin Ziegler improves to 4-1 with the victory, going 5 2/3 innings and allowing five runs on six hits while striking out eight and walking just one.
Jason Heflin gave up one run over 2/3 innings, Brett Macari and Colton Reavis both pitched an inning of scoreless relief.
Aaron Cornell had three of the Larks 10 hits. Austin Darby extended his hitting streak to 14-games with two singles.
